Cost of new CH system?

I live in a 3 bed house in SW18. Since I moved in, 6 years ago, the radiators more often than not heat up when the hot water comes on, even though the CH is switched off. A British Gas engineer told me this was the result of "back circulation" due to faulty plumbing.
To compound matters the hot water is now behaving erratically. When the timer switches the water on it doesn't always heat up, although the central heating DOES come on (again, even when it's switched off).
My boiler and the timer were installed by British Gas 2 years ago. Should I consider a new system and if so how much would it cost? I think we're just talking about the plumbing as the boiler is comparatively new.
Thanks guys!
Andrew

Hi...If you have a boiler with cylinder setup, it sounds as if you have reverse circulation occurring which a decent RGI would be able to sort out. Best guess...motorized valve problem (not diverting properly)...get that sorted and if you still have a problem then it is a pipework issue.
If BG installed the boiler 2 years ago why haven't they rectified the situation
Cost of replacement will depend on specification of installation but don't throw your money away on a new boiler.

Thanks for your response Canucklehead. I just called BG who are sending a senior engineer out tomorrow to address the problem. In the event of the problem being back circulation (and I think it is - I recall a valve being changed years ago and the problem remained) can you recommend an RGI (if that isn't contravening any rules on here!)?
Thanks,
Andrew0
