You won't get a 2 bed flat in London for £540. All you'd get for that sort of money is a room in a flatshare. It is difficult to get any sort of accomodation in London. Most landlords want a large deposit and a months rent in advance. So you would probably need a couple of grand up front. Also a lot of landlords won't rent to people on benefit. So basically moving to London isn't a viable option as you need savings and two good salaries to finance it.
Benefits - you'd get the same as you are now plus LHA and council tax benefit and it wouldn't be enough to live on.

The £540 is per week, so £2340 per month  , and there are properties available for that price (although they are unlikely to take someone on benefits ;) ).

Yoshuas answer was a guess. Thank you very much anyway.

I wondered if the true figures are possible to get.

Can anyone give an accurate answer?

    Or somewhere to find it?

entitledto.com doesnt give the answers to income based jsa..........

Of course it's enough to live on, or otherwise how would the many thousands who are unemployed manage to live on it? What a very silly thing to say!

I cant find the answer anywhere.

But I am very interested to know the answer, I hope someone on here can point us in the right direction?

Where else can you look if not entitledto.com?
  • Google?

I googled JSA rates 2008 and this was among the results. Your hypothetical couple should be able to find out what they would get on this page: http://www.dsdni.gov.uk/index/ssa/benefit_information/benefit_rates.htm#jsa_ib_per_all

Scroll down or click JSA Income Based to be taken to the table of rates.

Thank you so much, very good.

So I think the answer is 94.95 JSA for Couple - both aged 18 or over (it doesnt give for if both over 25)

Anyway is that figure jsa and IS? Or is income support on top of that and then CTC?

This couple are both 25 and have a baby.

So if the answer is 94.95 per week I dont think this is enough to live on with a baby.

Remember these are private rents and many landlords do not want tenants on benefits. Plus they would be asking for a deposit of probably a months rent plus another month's rent in advance. So about £5000 to find, plus this hypothetical family probably don't have furniture etc. Why not do a private rent where they are if they just want a home of their own?

Maybe in RDB's hypothetical world they have other secret sources of income at present. ;)
