Travel company charging for credit card transaction

I just booked a couple of flights to Canada in May with Candian affiar and when I paid for the transaction I discoved they charged me £11.00 for using my crdeit card!!

When making the booking no where did they say they would charge for this or offer /tell me to use a debit card.

Seems quite ripped off being charged to pay for a transaction. Is this another way these companies screw people to pay extra for goods and transactions, feel a but miffed really.

If the website you booked through was http://www.canadianaffair.com, it appears to be quite clearly stated in their T&C's...
    Payment:
Full payment is due at the time of booking. Payment of balance by credit card, at any time, will be subject to a 1.5% levy. If paying your balance by cheque or debit card there will be no surcharge.

It has been fairly common for travel companies to charge a % for a few years now, not saying I like it, we use a debit card these days.

If they go bust you will get a refund off the CC company far quicker than thru abta, Atol etc. A debit card offers no protection so the 1.5% is worth paying

I think if I was using an airline likely to go bust I might consider it, I don't know why they can't be honest and quote the price you actually have to pay with surcharges and taxes, it would be less confusing.

  • Guys/gals-please note that agents/tour op's are charged 1.95% for c/cards up to 2.5% (amex) by the bank.

There is only so much that can be given away!

To be honest I don't mind paying the £11 extra if I was quoted that in the final fee, the t&c's are approx 200 lines long and to be honest who reads all the t&c when booking everything as you would never get round to paying anything!!!

What bugs me is that if they asked for a debit card I would of paid via debit card. I only found out when I actally paid for it.

I understand the reason but I wouldn't put up with Tesco adding 2% to my grocery bill would you?

  • Did they not tell the original poster? Or did they say 'refer to terms & conditions on web site' etc.....I agree with the tesco's scenario-may be they should have made it clearer. Debit cards are the way-nil charge!

But on the other side of course you go into a travel agent and buy a holiday you pay a deposit - who gets the interest on that money??
You have to pay the balance 8 weeks before departure - who gets the interest on that money??
You buy a cheapy flight for 6 months time - you pay now - who gets the interest on the money??
Tesco , Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys et all are in a hell of a scrap to win our grocery business - they don't charge for using a credit card and they pay the same rates as quoted!

Seems to me to be a rip off purely to increse profit without having to increase the 'Headline' fares.
