Cheapest PAYG mobile broadband - very infrequent use

I have been looking for a weekends away mobile service and found that T-Mobile appears to be offering unlimited mobile bb for £2/day with apparently no commitments, no catches, no minimum spend. So for the occasional days full use, this sounds good. And if you virus checker of Windows Update decide they would like to update themselves with a 'quick' 200MB download, no financial harm done...
Dongle from T-Mob is £50 though a better looking unlocked (thinking... abroad..) one could be had on Ebay for £55.
Any catches? To good to be true?

I've been using the T-Mobile one for a while now and, for £2 a day, I haven't come across a better deal for the occassional user. If you go through quidco, you get £20 back, making the dongle only £30. I did have a quick look at unlocking options, but there was nothing free so I'm gonna wait.
The speed and coverage seems ok ... you can browse the internet happily wherever you are. I spent a 4 hour car journey through the cotswolds browsing away without too many issues.
The only problem I've found is that the T-Mobile software is a bit poor. I sometimes had to reconnect to get my connection back.
When I bought mine, the T-Mobile pages stated '3GB per day' ... this has now changed to '3GB per month' ... but even so, for a light user this is plenty.

Do you have to have a T-Mobile phone to use this? If I had already bought the dongle and wanted to use it for two days, say Sunday and next Thursday, what would be the best way to pay the £4 to ensure the connection is available when I need it?0 -
I understand that this is completely separate from a mobile phone. When T-Mob talks about using a text message to top up, you actually send it from the software they supply on your laptop, again, no mobile needed. I also would be interested to know,. does 1 day mean midnight to midnight?0
