Cheapest PAYG mobile broadband - very infrequent use

Hi guys, looking for some advice on mobile broadband for the gf's parents.

They don't use the net very often so want the cheapest mobile broadband possible and don't really want to be to tied to a contract.

Most payg mobile broadband seems to require top-ups (minimum £10) that only last for 30 days.

Is there one where the top-ups don't expire and you just pay per MB or GB...

I did see a Three package that was £70 - £90 that gave 12 GB to last for 1 year which seemed ok, but can't find it anywhere now.

Cheers for your help.

    Hi there ,

I think it would be best to do the three broadband annual one as it is convenient , easy to use and its there when they need it. And if they do need a little bit more , you can decide to top it up if you wanted to if they have reached there limit. Or buy a new one ofcourse !! :)

you can order it online at argos

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5080757/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7COffice,+PCs+and+phones%7C10198997/c_2/2%7Ccat_10198997%7CLaptops+and+PCs%7C10199166.htm

Or at the link for £99.99

    http://www.thelink.co.uk/mobile-store/161717-8311/three-12gb-mobile-broadband-starter-kit-3-pay-as-you-go-broadband.html

If they only use it infrequently I think 12GB is enough to get them through the year

    Hope this helps

P.S. if you order it online , don't forget to go through a cashback site as this will save you a bit (every penny helps) :)

Oh yeah and if you get it from argos i think you get a £10 voucher when you spend £100 or more , so you could buy something else really cheap with it to make that extra couple of pence up to make it £100 ;)
 I am great , yes I am

    Thanks very much CLLC.

One thing that confuses me about this, it says:

Credit not included. To activate you will need to Top-up and convert your Top-up to a Mobile Broadband Add-on to get data allowances. Add-on valid for 30 days.

So will they have to top it up to get it to work? I assumed it wouldn't need any more spending on it until the 12 GB had been used up.

It seems that the PAYG card issued by ASDA is currently the best deal for mobile broadband on PAYG. It charges 20p per MB. See HERE.

Thanks Leopard.... is this for just using internet on your phone, or will it work in a dongle for internet on their computer too?

To be honest, I think even though they don't use it much, it will still work out VERY expensive for them using that.

20p per MB = £204.80 per GB.

Compare that to the Three pay up front deal = £100 for 12GB over the year...

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

Don't Vodaphone still do the £1 max a day on PAYG? That's what I've been using with my dongle (which I haven't used for a couple of months admittedly).

  • I bought a "3" 12gb starter pack which last for either 12 months or until you use the 12gb allowance on Saturday for £99.99(Argos) seems ok to me and whilst not getting superfast connections it is acceptable.
It will do for what i bought it for.

I used 3 mobile broadband if you can call it that. The service was almost non-existent, pages taking minutes to load etc

I now use T-Mobile which I find excellent.

Just thought I would mention this as 3 seem one of the cheapest but their service I found was awful.

'3's mobile broadband service doesn't provide very good or fast coverage in London but is fine in most of the rest of the country.

Thanks guys my parents currently use Three mobile BB in an area where apparently they shouldn't be able to use it as its not in a Three reception area. It isn't as fast as my VM 2mb BB but its a lot faster than their old dial up so they are happy @ £7.50 per month for 5GB allowance.

Same with the GF's parents and why I asked at the start of the thread. They are currently on dial up and don't use it much hence wanting the cheapest option possible. Wasn't easy for me (or you guys) to advise as i have no idea what usage they want. Really I think it will literally be absolute max - 4 hours surfing a month and 20 plain text e-mails. No downloads except the occasional Windows update etc.

Have checked Three coverage in their area of Sheffield and seems to be HSDPA all the way so have recommended that to them.

    Thanks for your help all.

    Quick question..

I use Three as my mobile phone providor and when I can't get Three coverage I get free roaming on other networks.

Can I assume Three doesn't have a similar agreement when it comes to their mobile broadband?

    Thanks.
