not always true. some batteries exposed to long periods of high temperature will dry out.

Get real, how would this apply to an old car's battery in the UK? If OP is planning a trip accross the Kalahari Desert, I suggest she gets a sealed battery for her car. :rotfl:

Exposing a battery to long periods of high temperature would reduce it's life even more than topping it up with tap water.

You are perfectly okay using tap water in a car battery that can be topped one, and if you really wanted to you could boil some tap water in a kettle

I 2nd the vote that in an old battery topping up with tap water will make precious little difference.

However sassy again hits the spot again with a garbage post:mad:

The only way boiling water is of any use is if you condense and collect the steam produced, not a problem but don't get the idea that boiling water alters it's properties in anyway. ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

i don't know if your aware but theres usually an engine under the bonnet of most cars, these engine things aren't to economical they wastes a lot of its energy in heat, some batteries are poorly positioned over sources of heat, this causes them to dry out.

i also wasn't aware this forum was restricted to uk readers only.

seriosuly though, i work on vehicles that work in dry warm conditions, combined with thier battery sitting over the exhaust area this causes the batteries to dry out very quickly. they need topping up once or twice a month.

No, sorry Bri.. you can't be right. ;)

In post #20 I said something similar...

You are nearly there with the boiling water idea.
If you boil water, then condense the steam, then that condensate is perfect for topping up batteries, etc. After all, it is distilled water. ;)

In fact, boiling the water only produces a water with more 'hardness' than before. Steam is water without impurities, so the longer you boil it, the harder the water you are left with.

But in post #22 Sassy 'corrected' me...

May I draw you to the forum rules - this is a open and free forum, anyone, can post anytime they wish.
I have a life thank you, may be it's you who needs to get one, as you appear to be replying to all my posts ;)

Take note, I said 'may be' - unlike you, stating facts when you obvious do not know.

I will use this forum as much, and as when I like, you don't like it, lump it! :T

    I am a qualified engineer :A You are a qualified mechanic? :p

The post is about topping up the battery in "a very old petrol car (N reg)". You will not find many of those in the Kalahari.
