Glasses

Anyone know a money saving way of getting a new pair of glasses that I'll actually like and wear?
I have -6.5 L and -5.5 R so need to be the thinner lenses as well as they won't fit in the glasses otherwise!!
I can get 25% of at specsavers which makes them about £80 due to having direct debit with them for contact lensess.. I'm just fed up as mine are about 5 years old and I can't see out of them as they are the wrong prescription!! I find because I work such long hours that I just can't wear contacts for two nights in a row these days.....
Really down about it all

Eyesight correction is a health issue and you are entitled to spectacles that fit your prescription. Unfortunately this doesn't mean you are entitled to trendy frames too

As well as high-street chain opticians, can you try a local, independent practicioner? They may have a scheme which allows you favourable payment terms. Independents want your business - they have to compete with Specsavers, D&A and Vision Express.
You ain't going to like this but could you think about whether you can afford both glasses and contact lenses? I have decided to ditch the contacts for the time being 'cos I can't afford both. I do a lot of sport and it means running and cycling in my specs, which makes me look like a berk, but when you're in debt looking cool is a luxury :cool:My Debt Free Diary I owe:

Try glasses direct, I've had glasses from them and they are cheap, fast and have loads of funky frames to choose from. I don't know how to do a link but a google search will find them for you. Just follow the instructions and if you're not 100% happy they will either exchange or refund (I've never had to send any back though). Frames start from £15 and lenses are way cheaper than any you will find on the high street. I don't work for them, I'm just really pleased with their prices and service.I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead

No I totally agree - I would be happy to wear glasses most of the time and then have a little supply of dailies in case I went out or something. It's just the expense of the glasses as the outlay...
Thanks! I'll look into independent stores...Debt Free since 2012Current Savings £1,400Current Mortgage £143,398.270 -

Have you tried the shops that don't do eye tests, just work from your prescription.
A shop near me does this and they stock some nice frames and prices are more reasonable than the opticians.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
I have struggled with massively expensive glasses and paid for thinner lenses as I have a similar prescripton to you. but i have found glasses direct the best thing ever. i have two pairs of really funky glasses with chunky frames (daquiri and cuba libre are the names they give them!) - red and purple! and they were £25 each, they have a no quibble guarantee, and i have never felt so confident to leave my contacts at home

btw, I dont work for them, and im sure there are other sites but this is the only one ive tried!:money:0 -
I have a similar prescription to you and have never paid for thinner lenses! I just get the basic lenses and they are fine!
Some of the online ones won't do prescriptions above a certain strength (they look at the Sph and the Cyl) - I think Glasses Direct are in this category. Others do do them but sometimes you have to phone up and it costs more (I think it was £10 more from memory)
The ones I used this year were specs2go and glasses2you (think i got main pair off one and prescription sunglasses off the other)
there is a list somewhere on this site of all the places that do glasses onlineIndecision is the key to flexibility

Wow I'm really impressed - I was worried about buying online due to my prescription being quite high but I love those Daquiri frames.
Thanks so much at that price I might even be able to afford next month
PS MLF - I do like wearing my glasses but feel so much more confident without them for a big night out - Mind you the number of big night out is diminishing to near zero on my £10 a week budget so I think I'll be full time in glasses!!Debt Free since 2012Current Savings £1,400Current Mortgage £143,398.270
