Looking for a nice hotel near to Palace Theatre in Manchester

Hello,

I would like to book Mary Popins for a Saturday in January, we don`t know the area well and think it may be nice to have somewhere to stay rather than trying to park in the dark!! any ideas for a nice hotel preferably one with parking close by.

Thanks

There are many hotels around the palace theatre-varying in prices

The nearest to the Palce theatre:

The Midland and the Palace hotel are your pricey ones-the Palace is on the same block as the theatre-its about half a minute away. The Midland is also very close by-walking distance but expensive.

There is the Britannia Hotel which is a couple of blocks away. The Thistle is on the same road as the Britannia-both 5-10 mins walk.

There is another Britannia hotel-Britannia Sacha which is a bit further away-15 minutes walk which is reasonably priced, same with the Gardens hotel (a bit closer to the theatre tho-by a couple of minutes).

Hotel Novotel is also close by-around the corner from the Palace.

    The following may help

Please don't take offence at this, but under no circumstances would I recommend these hotels to a lone woman traveller. Both are notorious in the city, particularly Sachas which is the better of the two as hotels go to be honest. Just one of the problems is that it can only be accessed down an alleyway to the side and rear of Debenhams. I've stayed there myself and did not enjoy the experience.

For the Palace theatre your main options have mainly been listed by the same member. You have the Palace Hotel directly opposite the side of the theatre. The Midland a little further down Oxford Road, or round the corner on Portland Street, you have (in order of proximity) the Premier Inn Portland St, Novotel, Ibis, Princess on Portland, Britannia, Ramada Jarvis Piccadilly and the Thistle with City Inn just down Aytoun Street to the right before the Thistle. If you want a really nice hotel I'd go for the Palace, the Midland or the Abode (Rosetti) on Piccadilly or the Malmaison, also at Piccadilly.
Oh! Almost missed out the Radisson Edwardian just further towards Deansgate from The Midland which is always a good bet for celeb spotting.

Edit: Also forgot to mention Jurys Inn about 5 mins walk away from the theatre that has plenty parking across the road. They've got a cosy Irish theme bar in the cellar.

Thanks all for the suggestions, it will be 3 of us - me, himself and of course Katie. We will drive to Manchester - not really thought about budget - but as with us all on this site we want the best possible deal.

Still out on the dates which could be 17, 24, 31 January.

Would you tend to book as soon as you decide the date or would you wait till last minute in the hope of a good deal?

Mattyc84 can`t really give you any more info than that at the moment.
  • Close to the Palace there is a Premier Inn, a Novotel and a Jury's Inn. All well within a 5 minute stroll. If you want to splash some cash, then the Radisson Edwardian is nice, and again about a 5 minute walk, or so.

i recommend the palace hotel thats the one i have stayed at a few times and is a nice hotel. and very close to the theatre its owned by the princliple hayley hotel/conference chain, this is its web site http://www.principal-hayley.com/manchester/the-palace-hotel/index.asp (though you can find the hotel on lastminute.com as well as other hotel booking sites)

  • one of the best hotels (per tripadvisor) is the Marriott Victoria and Albert - it has its own car park unlike a lot in the city centre and so you wouldn't have to pay very high NCP parking charges. The Marriott V&A is probably 15/20 minutes from the Palace. There are many restaurants just a few minutes away - Strada, HaHa, GBK, Zizzi, Wagamama etc - all in the new business disctrict which is very close to this hotel. It's probably about a ten minute walk into the shops from here.

As for other hotels, I could suggest the following (a range of prices/standards):
    - Jury's Inn
    - Novotel (can be noisy due to its location)
    - Premier Inn GMex (again, can be noisy if don't request room at back of the hotel)
    - Midland Hotel
    - Radisson (very nice hotel - nicer than Midland imo)
    - Abode (a smaller boutique type hotel, got a great restaurant)
    - Malmaison - can get some good weekend deals.
    - Crowne Plaza (this is new so not sure if any good deals - wrong side of town for the Palace though - this is by the Printworks)

I would avoid some of the suggestions made by other posters, including the Britannia.

I'd check out the prices (Laterooms with quidco cashback?) but look at them with TripAdvisor too!

    Hope this helps.

Avoid Britannia, Sachas and Thistle imo!

Midland is nicer than Palace but a bit further away, Raddisson Edwardian definitely a step up but with price tag to match.

I don't think the Arora has been mentioned - its not too far from the Palace - is on Princess street , its a 4* and for the quality is always more favourably priced than Midland etc in my opinion. Nice modern hotel . I normally book via laterooms. Theres also a decent bar - Obsidian - attached to the hotel.

    hth

Edit:- Forgot to add , for a saturday night, i'd always book as soon as you are sure of dates as mcr centre does tend to get filled up and prices go up rather than come down i think.

if you can, avoid a date when Man United are at home as the hotels can get pretty full and as a result can be noisy.

The palace hotel is over the road and can be had for £80 on those nights for all three of you in a room. For that price I would go there..
