Brilliant! Just the reply I was hoping for ... something I (the most impractical man born) can think about fixing myself without spending any real money! I'll have a look at this tomorrow night (too much raiding of the Christmas ale has been going on this early evening to tackle such a job!).

Thanks and I'll keep you informed.

I find a few beers helps enormously when doing this sort of thing

Before you start the job just make sure you cover the drain hole in the basin first, you don't want to loose the screws or ball valve down the drain especially if you have had a few beers

Wow, it worked! Good feeling that, sorting it out without having to spend money on getting someone else to do it. Thanks VERY VERY much!!!!!

  • Just wanted to say thanks so much for posting this tip - we've bought the valve but it hasn't arrived yet. Showed this thread to DH and he's fixed it using your trick. Now going to see if we can return valve when it arrives :rotfl:

Hope it's ok to resurrrect this thread after all this time!? I have been using this trick to fix the shower ever since I was told how to do it. Recently, it is happening every week, which is getting a bit annoying! Anyone, have any advice, please? Would it be worth buying a new part for this shower, or just giving it up as a bad job and getting a different one?

    Thanks,

    Duncan

    Hi duncan

Just saw your post so maybe a bit late in the day now for an answer but here goes....

It really should not be happening every week unless you have a hell of a lot of limescale/dirt in your system?

What I do normally when the pressure relief valve pops out and refit it is to make sure the shower head is clear and none off the holes are blocked and to run the shower without the shower head at the coldest setting for a few minutes to get any rubbish out of the heating tank.
  • Thanks for the reply. I did get the ne part and have put that in now, which seems to have done the trick! Not sure for how long though. The hose and head were only a month or so old, as they needed replacing, too, so I don't think it can have been that. I like the idea of running the cold at full pelt through without the head on, but wouldn't that risk popping it out all over again anyway?

    Thanks again,

    Duncan

    Hi Duncan

Shouldn't be a problem running the shower at full pelt so long as you take the shower head off first. turn the dial to the coldest setting or if you are a bit concerned just set it midway and let the water run through the shower untill no more debris comes out.

It is only when there is a build up of pressure, usually because the shower head is blocked that the pressure relief valve comes into play.

Should add I've had the Gainsborough 10.5 shower over 2 years now? and it's still working fine for a basic shower, not had the pressure valve pop out for quite a while now but what I do now is if the pressure out of the shower head is not quite right I just clean the showerhead and let the water run through to give the tank a clean out.

The only issue I do have is that it is not hot enough during the winter months!

Mind you though I do live in the extreme North of Scotland and I'm on a private water supply (borehole), even the Polar bears don't put a toe in during the winter!!!
