Is this LIDL DVD player any good?

Hi all,

here is a link for you

http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20081124.p.HDMI_DVD_Player.ar7?OpenDocument&resetFilialDaten=1&updateNL=1&id=454&country=&zipcode=BL+1+8TH&city=Lancashire&city2=Bolton&street=Crompton+Way&ar=7

I have a brand new Phillips HD television 720p and at the moment i do not have an HD source.

I have read on another forum that this DVD plaver will upscale my very small collection of old ish DVD's so that they will look better on my new television.
I am not too sure what upscaling means exactly other than the picture should look better.

Your constructive comments would be appreciated

If it upscales standard DVD to HD, yes.

  • Looks good you would need a HDMI cable from DVD to TV for good upscaling, i got one from Home Bargins for £1.99 1.5M, BARGIN!
I would investigate it on AVforums to see if there is any more in depth info on it
  • The TV will upscale (downscale) any input to suit it self anyway, so ANY DVD player will give same or similar result
Which unit do you think is going to have the better upscaler - a 30 quid dvd player or a 500 quid telly ?
this is just dvd manufacturers bandwagon jumping to increase their sales with no real benifit to end user

link to avforum on the subject

Not sure about the upscaling thing but you might benefit from the use of the digital HDMI connection as it cuts out the Digital to Analogue Convertor processing.

Although having said that I think some people say Component connections are good and are on most standard non-HDMI dvd players.

BTW I think this DVD player was on sale a few weeks ago.

You're so wrong. The output of my PS3 when playing DVDs is far superior to the upscaling the TV does from any input, whether Sky or DVD playback on the Xbox 360 ( console doesn't upscale as its only using component, not HDMI).

    Conor,
are you saying that the upscaling of the DVD player, when connected by HDMI (forgetting the upscaling that my tele might do) should/may/might give me a better than reasonable pic when playing my dvd's.
Are you also saying that your PS3, although connected only by component connections, gives you a better than reasonable pic, on whatever HD tele that you may have, when playing dvd's?
