AOL Broadband speed problem

Hi,

Weve got AOL Broadband and over the past few week our speeds have dropped down to 120kbps (0.1mb!), whereas we used to get around 1mb +

Calls to their technical support are of no help as they blame everyone but themselves. So far its been Sky TV's fault (Ive since unplugged my sky box from the phone line and the speed is the same).

Now they are blaming BT saying our line can only take speeds of 512kbps (Any broadband speed test I take online says we can get between 2 and 4mb where we are).

Its a Netgear router and we have tried resetting etc.

Could there be anything causing this drastic drop in speed?

Thanks in advance

I think it may be AOL, as I am experiencing the same problem. It is ok during the say but terrible in the evenings. I came on here to see of anyone else was finding aol slow.

yeah Im beginning to thing the same. They are so full of sh*t, after blaming Sky and BT, they told me to get a BT engineer out. So I rang the next day and lied telling them BT had been out and the line was fine. Then they try and tell me 'oh we are having problems at your local exchange, it will sort itself out this week'. They make it up as they go along.

"We can drop your rental to £9.99 a month"
    "For 0.1mb?"
    "Yes sir"

A couple of weeks ago I had the exact same problem - my aol broadband went from 6meg+ to 0.1meg. I chased technical support about it and a level 2 tech finally told me that it's a problem that a lot of customers are experiencing and that there was a team dealing with the speed problems and they'd have it sorted asap. It took another couple of frustrating phone calls, but it's finally sorted. I think you just have to keep on at them and it should be sorted eventually. Hope this helps a bit....

i've been having more or less the same problem for 3 weeks now

last time i checked (roughly around a month ago) speedtest.net i was getting 5647kbps download and 341kbps upload

but recently download is 891kbps and the upload remained more or less the same

so......i rang up AOL technical support and went through the whole sky, filter, router settings crap and got nowhere coz the 'techy' had no idea what they or myself were talking about but in the end got hung up on!!

so straight away i rang up to ask for a MAC code and the nice bloke said he'd email me it without any hassle or offers of cheaper monthly rates etc which was a pleasent surprise!

he did ask one question as to why i was moving ISP to which i replied with the speed problems above. he then informed me that i still had a while left on my contract and that i would have to pay a lump sum buy-out, but then he said he would like me to speak to a level 2 technical support person and if they could not fix the problem then i would be able to break my contract free of charge.

so i took him up on his offer and spoke to a gentleman named Varun.

Varun then started to go through the whole process that the first techy did until i cut him off explaining i'd been through it and then i explained the problem to him, he then directed me to speedtest.net and i did another test whilst he was on the phone and gave him roughly the same results as i showed you above, he then said to me that the speed i was getting was 'fantastic quality' for my connection and there was no problem with my line.

i then explained to him that he was wrong and i should be getting around 9 times faster, i informed him that i was looking at broadband results from my arae and that the average connection was 3500kbps and said to him 'listen mate, i know my stuff and clearly you're trying to rip me off and clearly you think im an idiot but i'm not so i'd like to speak to your boss right now'

so i got put on hold for 5 mins and Varun came back saying he'd done a connection test from his 'end of the line' and said i should be getting 3500kbps+ connection!!

he then said engineers were 'on their way to the exchange to fix the problem and it should be fixed in 24 hours and if it is not give me a call back after this period'

so i asked if the call was recorded, he asks why, i ask again, he says yes then asks why? again, i say because this call will be used as evidence that i was mislead by you when i ring in 24 hours to get out of my contract for free :D

That's exactly what I was told - at half 6 on a saturday evening!! The guy I was speaking to couldn't understand why I didn't believe that an engineer was going to be coming out on a saturday night or sunday morning...... Muppets!!!!
