Was it kept in the fridge up until it was cooked? If it wasnt that was probably why it went off. Nevertheless Tescos dont need to know that so if she took it back she should expect a full refund. She could even write to head office and complain.

I had bought chicken breast fillets from Tesco in the summer. I went to cook them but on opening the packaging the most awful smell come out. They were well within the use by date so I phoned Tesco. I was told to put them in the freezer and just bring them to the store next time I was going shopping for a refund. When I went to the store a few days later the CS people had no quible about refunding me my money and didnt even look in the bag at the chicken. I think the smell put them off somehow. I wasnt offered any goodwill gesture and it never entered my mind to ask for one. I was simply glad of the refund.

I have returned food items (meat, fish, fruit etc)to stores on many occasions and all with very legitimate reasons for doing so, but mostly because the food has gone off prior to it's use by date.

By law you are fully entitled to a refund and nothing else. Having said that, I would usually ask for a store manager when returning the goods and about 80% of the time would also be offered some form of compensation on top of the refund whether it be a voucher or replacement of the goods. If compensation wasn't forthcoming I would then explain that it has cost me time and expense to return to the store which usually did the trick. Be firm, but polite.

I have done this with food before - taken it back in the bag, and they really aren't bothered about whats in it...just keeping you happy.

One of our friends is an Asda store manager and he said that he's had people come back with chickens that had gone off plus a restaurant bill where they'd had to take the whole family out to dinner and Asda have refunded the chicken AND the restaurant bill!!

Oh yes its worth taking it back. My friend took the meat back and was given a full refund plus £10 on one of them gift card things.
She said the manager was actually at the till and it was her who said give a refund and the £10 gift card thing, the manager never even spoke to my friend, just the CS girl.
Maybe its because it was New Years Day and many people do have a roast dinner and the fact that dinner was ruined could be why she got the £10 card ?

She was happy with the result anyhow :xmassmile

I'm not surprised that this sort of thing goes on. Thanks for confirming, Ginger.

Hugh (Fearnley Whittingstall) has a tip, which is to buy meat that has a clingfilm wrapper rather than vacuum packed, as it does not keep as long, so will be fresher (if you see what I mean)
Baby due on 7th August - eep! :j
