Meat which has gone off

Hi, sorry not sure exactly where to post this so if it is in wrong forum apologies and feel free to move to the correct forum.
Supposing you bought a joint of meat, large joint to be honest from Tesco's and when you went to cook it the meat had gone off what would you expect back as far as refund ?
My friend bought a large joint for New Years dinner, she had invited the In laws round and her Brother . anyways she had prepared the veg early this morning then went to put the meat on but it had gone off, even though the date was about 5th jan (use by). So here she is expecting people for dinner with no meat, veggies all prepared and ended up having to do toad in the hole which she was not happy about.
So my question is, do you think she should be re embersed (sp) for the joint (which was £8.50 ish) or should she get a gesture of goodwill from the store as well ?
what would you do if this happened to you ?
thanks

You need to be sure the meat has actually gone off . Most meat is vacuum sealed and there is a smell as soon as it is open .The smell will go away after 10 minutes .I work in a factory that supply Asda and Sainsbury with these beef joints .You dont really no how old the joints are .0 -
Yes by law she has the right to a refund, keep the packet and meat if you can and take them back.
Or id say I think your word and the packet would be ok.Kind Regards

Yes she has the packaging and the meat which she will take back to the store.
The meat is deffinately off, she said her whole house stunk cos the smell was that bad.
I thought she should get a bit extra bearing in mind she had guests for New Years Day lunch which was spoiled because the joint was off.0 -
we have had this at asda, we got a replacement, refund and £2 on a gift card, if it is indeed off, just take it back, they can't argue if it is off and still in dateWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

You are entitled to have what you paid refunded. Though due to the fact that the product was bad I think it likely that Tesco will offer you a gesture.
If you had eaten the meat and it had made you ill, then you would have been able to claim compensation for negligence. To be able to substantiate a claim in negligence you have to meet three criteria. These are as follows:
1. A duty of care was owed.
2. The duty of care was breached.
3. Damage occurred as a result.
You fulfill only parts one and two of the criteria, since you have not suffered as a result of the negligence. Therefore, your claim in negligence would fail.0 -
Well I work for Tescos and I am nearly 100% sure that your friend will get a full refund. Possibly a replacement, not sure if all stores will replace.
Just take it to customer services with the receipt and explain that it has went off.0 -
Reading back over the posts I see some people are saying that your friend should get some sort of gesture.
I would highly doubt if you will get anything other than a full refund and replacement. Its just not tesco policy.0 -
My sister bought a turkey from Tesco last year and on Christmas morning she went to cook it and could smell that it had gone off. Tescos refunded the price of the turkey and gave her £5 voucher for goodwill. I am sure you will at least get a refund. Good luck.0
