MBNA changing statement due dates

  • Happened to me too. They did it in December, when they hoped Christmas would distract.

Funny they never change the date to later. They said they informed me but I never had anything in the post and my googlemail account is devoid of any communication from them.

Whillst it may have been down to me to check the sudden change on the statement, my terms and conditions clearly state a monthly payment, but they have engineered 13 payments in a year.

    So who changed the calendar?

They've reinstated the 0% rate so I won't give them the satisfaction of paying off early.

Another interesting thing I noticed. When I was in the interest free arrangement, my minimum payment was £25. As soon as they took the benefit away it went up considerably. I had been paying £150, but when it is reinstated I will drop down to £25 and put the money away. No sense helping them out when they weren't prepared to help me

I got caught out by MBNA changing the number of days from two to three that they say it takes for debit cards to clear. This was only on their website when you log in and go to make a payment.

They hit me with interest and and fine, which I did get back.
  • I'm going to keep this simple.

A customer agrees to a lender’s T&Cs and does the decent thing by setting-up a direct debit to pay back money owed by an acceptable date to the lender. Why then is it OK for the lender to change dates without PRIOR notice BEFORE the statement arrives? When you have a bank loan do you not have a FIXED date which you have to make a payment by? In law what is the difference between a credit card and a bank loan?

I've just clawed back £565 from MBNA because they know if I took them to court I would have a field-day with their T&Cs.
  • Just imagine for one minute if we took the time to check all the small print on
EVERYTHING WE DID............exactly that is all we would probably do,and that is why Credit card companys, energy providers, insurance,Banks etc etc
keep changing things around.........BECAUSE WE DONT ALL HAVE THE TIME....THEY KNOW THAT AND THAT IS WHAT THEY WANT,,EASY MONEY I
KNOW BECAUSE I USED TO DO IT TO MY CUSTOMERS!!
  • 365 days /12months/statements = 30.416666666666666666666666666667 days????

They have to change payment/statement dates as above

They send you a bill before the payment due date?

Just set up a min payment direct debit and top up if you want to pay more

But if you only pay the minimum on the due date, don't you get charged interest despite paying more a few days later?!!

I think what the posters are saying is fair. February is the month to watch out for with Barclaycard!!

The point is that MBNA change the statement dates so that there is a lot less than 30 days between statements, in some months it is only 26 or 27.

I have loads of DDs for mortage, insurances, T.V. licence, electricity, telephone etc. etc. and they ALL come out on the same day every month only moving backwards if the date falls in a weekend. The other credit card I have a DD for takes the money out on the same date every month.

There is no reason at all for MBNA to keep changing the date other than to try and catch people out. It makes it very hard to budget and keep control of your finances if you do not know exactly when the payment is due, some months it changes by 6 days, not just 1 or 2.

I find it odd that anyone can defend such a practice.

We all know we should check our statements but I think this is the banks way of fighting back, Barclaycard have just done this to me they moved the payment date forward just one day after 6 months of it being the same, I'd sent the payment from my account but it didn't show on my statement until the day after the due date, the harsh letter I received (I've never missed a payment before) was dated the same as the due date which leads me to believe this was done to deliberately trick people & get some charges back!

This wheeze has been mentioned before, but cannot be stressed too often.

Particular care is needed with all cards run by MBNA (e.g. Alliance & Leicester, MBNA itself, Sony, Virgin). One of MBNA's favourite tricks is to bring the payment due date forward 5-6 days. IME, notice of this change is embedded somewhere in the small-print leaflet which accompanied your previous statement and, if feedback here is anything to go by, hundreds of customers are caught out.

Let's face it, for every MSE that complains to MBNA and gets a refund, there will be many more who simply pay up. So, whether or not this is the intention, it's a nice little earner.

  • I have written a stinking letter to their Customer Advocate Office.

You may have got some pleasure from doing that but a more polite approach might have cut the mustard.
