Stronghold

Helloooo, I need advice! I took Podge to the Vet today for a check up, as she's now over 10 i've decided to take her 2x a year. (Podge -Tess- is my 10.5yr old cat). I told the Vet she was on 2x a year worming with Drontal, the previous Vet said 2x a year is ok as she doesn't hunt much at all, and as I live alone worming her isn't easy! Anyways, the Vet today said to worm her 3x a year as she does go out & has said 2x a year (On her 6 monthly check ups) they will do her with a roundworm/tapeworm combo wormer & then in the meantime to use Stronghold as it does fleas & some worms.
Vet said this is as good as Frontline & makes less mess while also doing one type of the worms, he said the other type are ok 2x a year & this will ensure she has 3x a year for the roundworms? So, my questions:
1) Is Stronghold as good as Frontline in your opinion?
2) Where's best to buy it cheaply? (If it can be bought off prescription)
Anyway, he did a flea scrape & found none, her weight is now down from 4.1 1/2kg in March to about 3.8 something. He said they'll check her weight again in March when she's vaccinated but that it should be ok cause I was trying to get her to lose weight! Gonna up her food abit.
Her teeth aren't too bad, abit of plaque? but not enough to do the scale & polish under anaesthetic yet which she had 18 months ago. He said she can have a small amount of dried in with her wet & if her Cystitis symptoms return we know why.
Says she's very healthy & looks good & so i'm happy. Now, after all my waffling, is Stronghold good!? The receptionist said she prefers it to Frontline as there's less of it & it makes less mess & the Vet said it's as good as Frontline, I just am always suspicious of new things when Frontline has been so good & the last Vet said it's the best there is!
Gonna see how cheap I can find it but any web addys of cheap places welcomed!

Frontline makes a mess? I've never found it makes a mess....
you snap the top and squeeze it on
End of hassle
As for wormers I use 2 different ones on my friends advice (who is a vet), I alternate them so 1 time Panacur and next time Drontal. They each cover one type of paracite the other doesn't (although both are pretty rare here) so I was told to alternate them for the best cover. Best place to buy it from I found was www.vetuk.co.ukDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Strongholds good - it saves wrestling to wrom cats! I beleive you still need a prescription for it.
I use Advocate which is also a flea/wormer and this costs me about £25 for 6 doses. (also need s script for this)Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -
F****line is in my opinion becoming less able to kill fleas and is no better than your average permethrin based product e.g. B*b M***** etc.
I have had another case of hooching fleas just this morning despite use of the above named product. Use something that works. Advantage works well for fleas still and is cheaper than Stronghold/Advocate. I cant see any point in using anything other than Advantage + wormer of choice and is very cost effective.
As a point of interest F****line may well lose its position in the market as being readily available without being POM - this is because if it is misused it can give some severe side effects.Garantissez-moi de mes amis, je saurai me defendre de mes ennemis0 -
Thanks all, I feel better about stopping the Frontline now, well she has 1 sachet of it left which will be Dec 1st then onto this Stronghold 1st Jan/Feb & March then her vaccinations are in March & i'll see what he says. I've never seen any on her but I still want her treated. Is it ok to start this Stronghold 1 month after h3er last Frontline? Or too close together? I'll look into Advantage definitely! I'm lucky to have her she's an amazing cat, so affectionate & loving & easy to do things with (Like nails!). She's never had fleas that i'm aware of & a 'helpful' customer in the Vets said don't do her it's a waste of money if she has none, but what about prevention lol i'm no way stopping.
Thanks all, I am glad there's apparently less of it cause Frontline seemed to squirt out forever & was a pain! I'd have to find tons of spots to put it on her neck, if I did just one place it was too much! Off to look at Advantage now! I looked at Stronghold online & do need a prescription :!!0 -
My vet charges around £20 for 3 doses of Stronghold (one a month)
I noticed Viovet have it for roughly half this, but I didn't purchase it there because the vet's prescription fee would only have left me with a saving of about £3My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
Mine was £14 something + vat, not too bad but it'd be £11 online including vat I think!0

stronghold is a good product as it give peace of mind that the round worm will be continually killed during the products life on the animal. tablets dont have this. so could work out more cost effective as only need you have a tapewormer rather than a multi-wormer
frontline combo an equally good product. it has a extra ingrediant that frontline doest have. so the combo kills adult fleas and prevent any eggs from devolping (flea can lay up to 50 eggs day) so can help keep costs down as less need to by eniromental sprays0 -
Stronghold is good - I used it for my two but then changed to Advocate cos the Tom hunts & is prone to earmites. I didn't have alot of problems worming them (I'm v firm with my 2) but am glad of avoiding unecessary fuss & covering them in `one go'!0
