yes i know it doesnt make sense as long as its chocolate and not sweets
crisps yes but not cakes
like you said the school dinner kids have a choice of a pudding i think perhaps a chat with the head teacher is in order because it does seem un fair and if they are worried anout unhealthy foods why allow crisps and chocolatesSpendless wrote:They allow crisps and chocolate but not cake. Surely the school dinner kids get the choice of a sponge pudding?
what about breadsticks, crackers, cheese cubes, pot of jelly.0 -
Its that time of year again, my kids are off back to school next week and I am starting to think about lunchbox ideas on the cheap but healthy and nutritious. I wondered what everyone else does? Ideas so far...
-sandwiches with bread made in BM fillings inc. cheese spread, tuna, smoked meats, corned beef & lettuce, egg & cress, slice off joint (Mondays) all with salad.
-satay sticks
-wraps (with hummus to make filling stay in!)
-pasta combo with veg in fridge
-couscous & veg
-rice salad
-piece of fruit
-carton juice with straw
If I do baps I take one at a time out of the freezer so they stay fresh
Can't think of anything else, just wondered what you guys do?0 -
last month's good food mag had a great packed lunch planner with lists of carbs, protein, calcium, fruit & veg. The idea is you pick one from each column & have a healthy balanced lunch.
I'll post the lists (in a my-version non copyright way of course) if anyone is interested.

My kids are so fussy wont touch salad ect
But they will have in their lunch boxes things such as home made buns ,cake.
Flapjack, Cold HMpizza slices, youghrt, and s/wich with hm chicken mayo ect.
Also HM crisps.
Then i just make sure they have a good balance warm meal for tea.And a filling breakfast before school, they fav is warm weatabix with honey on.Proud to be DEBT FREE AT LAST0 -
I do similar things Liz. I don't put juice cartons in though as I think they are a bit wasteful. I've tried juice in a reusable container but I find they get difficult to keep clean so we stick to water.0

DD likes:
Rice/Pasta with chicken
Cold chicken legs
Sarnies/pitta breads of cheese, ham or marmite
HM flapjacks or cakes
HM yogurt or shop bought
Sausage rolls
3 x fruits
Bottle of water
LF crisps (3 times a week)
She is entitled to free lunches and starts secondary on Tuesday with a canteen for lunch. I hope this goes smoother than at primary school and if there is nothing she wants hot, she has the choice of a sarnie.
Does anyone know the prices of meals/sarnies at secondary schools
Thanks

PP when ds1 went for his taster day at secondary school, he was advised to take £1.50 for lunch. He did and bought a bag of crisps and a doughnut  So it's off to school with a packed lunch come Wednesday0

I was thinking about this last week as my daughter starts school on the 14th September - she only turned 4 last week so I'm worrying already!:o She will be taking packed lunches so as I have an evening meal planner I've added a lunch meal planner to that so I can make sure she gets a varied but balanced lunch.
I'm going to make some raisin cookies and mini muffins later to put in the freezer so I can use them as occasional snacks. I have also got some different sorts of bread (bagels, pitta, as well as HM wholemeal) to vary things a bit. Most of the plans include sandwich, fresh or dried fruit, cereal bar/HM cookie or HM muffin, and once a week crisps. The sandwich list I have includes tuna, corn & mayo; cheese & salad; peanut butter; ham & pickle or tomato; chicken salad; egg salad."all endings are also beginnings. We just don't know it at the time..."0 -
Hopelizzy, your mention of bagels has reminded me of something I was going to try. Mini bagel sandwiches. I read about them somewhere - slice the bagel vertically into little discs and make little sandwiches with them. Cream cheese and other spreadable stuff would be good. I bet you could dry the discs out in the oven to make bagel-crisps.0
