I think I'd rather sit next to a fatty, spilling over, than somebody clutching a baby/toddler the whole journey. At least the fatty won't have stray sticky little hands trying to grab you ... and a dribbling/snotty nose pointing at you... followed by the inevitable poo smell.

The headline is slightly misleading, the ruling only relates to those 'functionally disabled by obesity'. I don't agree with that, but perhaps some assistance could be given to those who are obese due to disability, and not the other way round? I have no idea how you would decide who that applied to, but it might be fairer than allowing those who have made themselves ill to benefit.
    Gone ... or have I?

FWIW, I think we should all pay for airline seats based on our weight in the same way we pay for our baggage

Bargain price seats for children then!

I must admit that I agree that those who are of a larger size should have to pay for the extra seat if they are unable to fit into one in the cabin that they have paid for, or are unable to fit there legs within the seat row.

On the large scheduled airline, like the one I work for, there is other cabins, whereby the seats are wider and recline further, extra legroom etc.

I know that people get frustrated when those who are larger may spill over into the next seat or need to recline as they are tall- trust me I have handled more than one complaint, but what can be done?
Should we force the person to upgrade to a larger seat in business etc?
Get the ground agents to charge for an extra seat in Economy?

Being realistic, an airline could not enforce these things. Imagine if it were you, regardless if you are 6'2" or a large person, I for one will not be making a scene!

An airline can only but do what is on the tin, and as crew we can only do so much to please everyone, remembering that the person you have a problem has paid the airfare and has the right to travel without all the hassle as well as you!

Just my pennies worth - no offence intended

I know someone in this country who will only fly if she can book two seats, as she cannot fit comfortably in one. You don't have to pay tax on the second seat, but you pay the rest of the fair, you only get one baggage allowance as well. She is quite happy to pay for the 2 seats, and save everyone the difficulty and embarrasment of the situation if she doesn't. But the airlines make it incredibly difficult for her, they always try and refuse to sell her the two, and have refused to allocate two seats next to each other (which obviously defeats the point of it), on board staff have been just as difficult about it as well.

Seems to me she can't win whatever she does.

Maybe we won't be flying long haul anyway .

Anyone spotted the new HUGE increase in the APD from 1st November?

    New APD charges
  • I recently flew and would probably be termed as a fatty by some of the posters on this thread

    I bought a plane ticket

Its hardly my fault if the seat they give me is too small I mean its not like they give you details of the seat size when you book is it ?

Yeah but that could be taken much further. What if someone got on the plane with a backside the size of the fuel-lorry loading the plane and said 'I didn't know I couldn't fit in' - what then?

There has to be a sensible limit. Giving a free extra seat to a fattychops isn't the way - what happens when said fattychops can't squeeze into two seats, and needs even more space? Another free seat?

Put them in the hold I say.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but economy flights to the USA - APD rising to £45 each way from £40 (from November 2009).

    Won't stop me!
