Would my Orange Sim card work in an O2

A friend of mine is about to upgrade his phone and has offered me his old one. He is with O2 (contract) and I have a very old Orange PAYG. Is my Orange Sim card interchangeable with an O2 mobile. Or if I bought a new (O2) Sim, would I then be able to register this with O2, or would it be locked?

A lot of O2 phone are not locked, give it a try it won't hurt.
An O2 payg sim will work straight off without a problem, just stick it in. . .
