Just been to my son's parents evening

....and all in all he's doing great. His teacher told us he excels with his reading, (he's 6). She said he is very very bright, and she is having to give him extra work to stretch him. She also mentioned that he has been put on the SEN register, as he is needing special attention due to how well he is doing. I was just wondering, is this what is known as gifted and talented? or is that something else?
This has come in the same week as he is being referred to a paediatrician for assessment for Asperger's Syndrome.
Just so proud of my little boy :j

Well done to your little boy.
I just had my sons (4 and 6) reviews on Monday and they were great too. DS6 is a "natural mathematician" and DS4 is working with the year group above.
Such a lovely feeling isn't it?!

My husband is an Aspie and is very intelligent but sometime on a different wavelength.

When it's your son it is called gifted. When it's your husband it's called something else.
Congratulations and it's great his abilities will be channelled.0 -
I worked in a school and there was an SEN register and a Gifted and Talented register. Sometimes students were on both. One boy in particular needed help with reading and writing, but absolutely excelled at PE and was one of the best in the school.Sealed Pot Challenge #817 £50 banked

It's really good they are recognising he needs stretching.
My boys were in the gifted and talented bracket but I often felt at primary school they weren't stretched and pushed ahead. Particularly the middle one who had dyspraxia and so had terrible writing. It took a really experienced teacher to realise that what was in his head was miles ahead of what was going on the paper and he needed some help.
He's doing A-levels now and is doing really well!

Many schools don't keep a G&T register for children as young as your son. That's probably why he's been placed on the SEN list. Whatever 'list' he's on (or not) he should receive teaching tailored to his individual requirements - including work differentiated to fully stretch him.0

The SEN register is not the same thing as gifted and talented but children can be on both simultaneously. I would see the teacher again if you're unsure as there could be a few reasons why he may be on it. Either way it just means he should have more support put in place. If he is being tested for Aspie then I would think that the SEN thing is possibly related to the resons he is being assessed for this if that makes sense.0

alm721, that was exactly what i was going to write, but didnt know how to word it correctly.
hippychick, well done on your son's reading interest !!!!!!!0 -
I remember many years ago when going to a parent's evening, the teacher saying that he had special needs. I asked her to explain what she meant. She explained that special needs referred to anyone not in the "normal" ability group - it could be that they needed stretching more or needing more individual help.0

I think it is great they have recognised his talents and are acting accordingly. I don't know about the difference between the SEN and gifted and talented situation you mention but earlier in the year I went for an interview at a school and they discussed those with difficulties in certain areas and those who were gifted being helped by the same team.Dealing with my debts!Currently overpaying Virgin cc -balance Jan 2010 @ 1985.65Now @ 703.63

It'd be an idea to contact the NAGC UK. It sounds like your son is gifted and that's great news, but it can also be very challenging. Some children are what they call 'twice exceptional' and do have giftedness and aspergers and sometimes the giftedness can cause behaviour that just LOOKS like aspergers or ADHD. The NAGC can recommend strategies to get to the bottom of any potential problems.
Good luck and well done on your delightful little one!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0
