Cash Credit card fraud and being held as negligent

Hi I know how you feel
Last year my son stole my debit card and over a two month period stole £1700 from my bank account
I went to the bank not knowing that it was my son however the bank wasn't interested. They said it was by my card and with my pin number. I never gave my son my pin number and I don't know how he found it out. The bank said that i didn't keep my card safe enough and so were not prepared to pay me back the money. My card was in my purse in my house in my bedroom in a cupboard. What am I supposed to do - carry the card in my hand at all times?? My son helped himself whilst his friend kept me occupied (so I later was told). In the beginning i said to the bank that I would go to the police and they said the police would not be interested. Now they say i will have to go to the police.
I am now going to FSA to appeal against their decision not to pay me back the £1700 and the charges that have occured as a result.
Any one experienced the same.
Martin what do you think. Is there anyway that I can win this case.
Are you prepared to prosecute your son? How old is he - i.e. is he working and can you start taking payments from him to repay what he stole from you?!!DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

He's 19 and keeps promising to pay but he never does and he always has no money0

Well I think it is time that he learnt the consequences of his actions. Does he live with you? He should be made to set up a standing order from his bank account on pay day to give you £x per week/month. Don't leave it up to him to give you whatever he has left after his weekend out with the lads!! Time to get tough with him!DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

Hi, I am afraid that you would have to prosecute your son for fraud/theft before you could apply to get the monies returned to you. The bank will not entertain any claim under their fraud/theft policies unless you do this and they have a crime reference number etc.
That is the only way you can get the money back other than making your son repay you gradually.
and even if it does become a complaint to the bank, the fsa or ombudsman will more likely tell you to prosecute also as per the t&c of the bank in question regarding fraud/theft.BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
credit card companies have been hit hard by the massive number of people who reclaimed the excess charges and the number of people who have used loopholes to avoid repaying debts they have incurred, are now much less sympathetic about refunding money taken off a card seen as due to negligence, whilst i don't agree with their harder stance these days, its understandable.0

The original poster sounded like a troll to me as soon as s/he/it said that her husband left his wallet in a conference room - what man leaves his wallet anywhere? A woman leaving her handbag might be believeable but in my experience wallets live in trouser, or maybe jacket, pockets.

Hi all, well... I am also a victim, as my wallet was also stolen 2 years back, and I could not do anything.0

Why? Did you leave your PIN in your wallet too?0
