Apparently, it does for some people but not for others. That's all I know, but I'd also like to hear from someone in the know about these things. :)
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

Do you mean hypnosis or hypnotherapy? I had a course of hypnotherapy for panic attacks which was wonderful! I recommend it to everyone. I have never felt so relaxed in my life! What do you want it for and where do you live? Bear in mind that it can be extremely expensive!

It worked for me a while ago, well kind of. You know what you are doing and feel different, but thats about as far is goes in my opinion. I don't believe that ppl have been put under and cant remember anything they do..

But i did hear when you are put under its like having 8 hrs sleep, and yes i did feel like that, but in the end its all in the head, you need to go with it, have a sense of humour, or it doesn't work.... its upto you what you do if you do it. Just an excuse to make a fool of yourself......

If you ever get the chance do it, go with th flow (drink advisable before hand) and its a great laugh......... :)

I had two separate hypnosis sessions for giving up smoking.

The first was a group session and two of us told the girl that we didn't think the first session had worked (you have a 15 min break in between). She said she would test us so in the second session she asked us to raise our hand. The two of us did. We were very relaxed though.

This having failed (we were supposed to buy a CD to back up the sessions and I didn't bother), I had a couple of private sessions with a girl who was learning, as part of her course work. Again these didn't work but it was much better being in your own home surroundings.

I see hypnosis not so much of you 'going under' but as helping you to completely relax. It is something you would not normally spend the time doing yourself but I am sure I could hypnotise myself if I did take time out.

You don't go to sleep (although my daughter did in her session!) and you are fully aware of what is going on around you all the time. You don't think it is working but for many people the end result is surprising.

My recommendation is don't try to be a cheapskate like me. Find a professional who will give free additional sessions if the first/second don't work. Others I know gave up smoking after 1 session and that was over a year ago.

Yes, it does work and I was a sceptic! I went to a reputable local hypnotherapist (who came recommended) when I was a totally addicted smoker and I stopped, though I stupidly started again after18 months and going through a family crisis.

Forget all the myths about falling asleep, not knowing what you're doing, going into a permanent trance, etc. You're in a state of total relaxation and aware of everything going on around you. The idea is to get through to your subconscious and change the way you think about an addiction, phobia, etc.

The key is to find a reputable therapist ... they don't come cheap, it cost me £250, but I soon got my money back.

I found it a very pleasant, if slightly daunting, experience (daunting because I knew I had to give up my greatest pleasure!). The key is to reallly WANT to get over your problem and the therapist spent about half an hour before the session making sure I was in the right frame of mind. It took just one session (as is the norm with her) and it's "guaranteed" for one year so, if you slip up within that time, you can go back for a refresher session.

The actual experience is, as I say, very pleasant. I lay back in a comfortable chair while she repeated the reasons why I wanted to give up smoking. She asked me to raise my hand from the arm of the chair and it felt so heavy, I couldn't do it! (Proves how relaxed you are).

Don't expect anyone to wave a magic wand ... you still need willpower, but it IS easier and something prevented me from reaching for that cigarette thatI knew would start me off again (well for a while anyway).

I say go for it ... but do lots of research first.
    Wins since 2009 = £17,600

    MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS

My mother had hypnotherepy to give up smoking a few years ago and I was VERY skeptical (at £400, do you blame me?) but it worked wonderfully for her. She said at the time she wasnt sure it would work because it was just like the woman talked to her for a bit, and she didnt feel any different but although she needed one top up session about a month later she gave up smoking there and then!
She does say that its not a miracle cure though, that you do still need willpower to counteract the addiction but it does give you an edge over the habit of lighting up.

I've tried hypnosis twice in the past, using a different person each time. Both were complete failures. I am somebody who has tremendous difficulty in relaxing, so have had to accept that I'm not a suitable candidate for being hypnotized.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
