Gran helping me get out of debt.

  • Moving out would be the worst thing you could do 'til you've learned to manage your money! Which believe me is very do-able (as long as that's what's you want) - while still having a life!

I moved out of home, and consolidated the £4k debt I had, but kept living the way I had been before and it tripled within a year! - You might turn out to be more sensible than me, but I think you'd save yourself a lot of pain in the long term if you get yourself on a bit more of an even footing before hand!!

Best of luck with it anyway! :D
  • Patrick,

You are so lucky to have 3 strong women around you! Allow their advice to sink in at the same time as using MSE members for advice. Don't become dependent on them sorting things out for you though...

    Good luck

Thanks. I do feel a bit hen-pecked at times though. I have snow-balled my debts and it has given me some inspiration to tighten my belt and start throwing money at them.
Debt Free thanks to MSE!!!! £15,000 debt became £0 thanks to some hard work and all you lovely people!

Like others have said... it could be bailiffs etc henpecking you instead of women that love you.... once they see you are doing what you say, they will relax.

Get you with the "throwing money at them" comment.. you are talking like a mser! keep it up

  • Hi Partickz!

Glad you're managing to start turning things round by returning clothes/ looking into selling the car etc!

As for what your mum and gran suggested, I think your gran's is a great idea! I'd be a bit worried that if your mum takes over your finances though, and just sorts it out for you, that maybe you wouldn't learn from that and there'd be a chance you'd go back to your old ways once your debt was clear? Is there maybe a way of your mum "over-seeing" what you're doing, but still allowing you to manage it yourself!

We all need a bit of help along the way at times, but you just have to be careful it's the right kind of help! When my dad found out about my debt, he offered to clear it for me - but the stubborn/independant streak in me wouldn't let me. They were really great, and let me stay here rent free which if they hadn't done I'd still be in a much bigger mess now! I'm so glad in hindsight I didn't just allow him to wipe my debt for me though - cause I feel as though I've learned so much more by working my way through it myself!

The best advice I can give, is to listen to as much advice as you can get (from others far more experienced than me) - but only to take the help that you really need. You'll get a much bigger feeling of satisfaction when the debt's gone if you do, plus you're far less likely to fall into the same trap again!

    xx

Have just been speaking to my brother on MSN about the car. He says that he has no intention of returning to Scotland any time soon. As far as he was concerned the car was mine until it was ready to be scrapped!!!!! I might just sell it as I managed without a car for 6 years!!! I passed my test at 17 and did not drive again until I was 23. My work is a ten minute walk from my house and there is no where to park there. My GF lives two streets away and my mates and regular pubs/clubs are all within walking distance. I just use it to nip to Tesco (which is only 5minutes walk)

    hi

if you have just been added to your brother's policy and your brother is not around, you need to be very careful and take advice before you drive the car again.

My understanding is that adding a second driver to an insurance policy is OK if the bulk of the driving is done by the first policy holder. If the first policy holder does not use the car, then the insurance is invalid. Loads of parents who put their kids on a second drivers when the kid drove the car have been caught out by this. Effectively you are driving without insurance, albeit unintentionally.

Also if you are using it that little, the brakes will seize etc and it will cost you maintenance, so get rid of it ASAP.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Thanks for the advice. I will try and sell it as soon as possible as it is just a waste. I didn't know that about the insurance though. I was only added to the policy as I had to do some driving for my brother and his wife when they were preparing to leave the UK. I just kept that situation up as I could not be bothered changing the policy.

I have been offered 72 hours of overtime between the 20th of December and 3rd of January. I said I would cover all the shifts that others did not fancy and was left with some truly weird shift patterns as a result!:o

Thanks for the advice. I know just what you mean. I need to want to change my spending habits otherwise I am destined to end up back where I started. I am going to sit down with my Mum tonight as my Gran has sorted the Credit Union money already at a very good interest rate compared to what I am paying!!!!

Thanks Gina. You can nag me as much as you like as long as it keeps me focussed on the debt!:j

    That was completely legitimate.

This ain't. Might be best to get it off the road. Also I had a car that I had to drive at weekends to keep it going - brakes siezed up twice, and it cost each time.

    Great.

Thanks RAS. My Dad is in the motor trade (mechanic) and is going to sell the car for me. He says we need to off-load it ASAP with the way the economy is going. He works with a guy who is looking for something reliable for his daughter who has just started working. My Dad says we should be happy for 1500pound. It is very low mileage 53plate and immaculate. The guy is coming round tonight for a look at it so my Dad is giving it the once over as he says his mate is 'eagle-eyed'.

I will have to offer the money to my brother first as it is his car but my Mum reckons he will not be bothered (he was head-hunted to the Middle East by a big Oil & Gas company to do some sort of gas storage project..... lucky git). The fact that he drives a Fiesta and only had enough clothes to fill a smallish suitcase when he left, shows his attitude to needless spending- why could I not be more like him?

Perhaps you wanted to be different, then?

And now? You sound like you may want to be more like your brother?
