Dial up ISP in UK & France - AOL?

Can anyone recommend a good dial up ISP for the UK please?
I have used AOL dial up for years, service was free-phone number anywhere I went in Europe or UK. Now Carphone !!!!!house have taken over, the service has been slashed - now calls to connect in are charged, no access anywhere else but the UK and the price gone up from £15-99 to £19-99 a month without warning. Not too impressed by this, as setting up the computer for the new service took three hours of calls to AOL support.
MMSE suggest migrating to a Hotmail or similar email address (sounds a very good idea) and using any available dial-up provider, so can anyone recommend a good ISP for the UK please? I would not mind paying for a decent service.
If anyone wants a recommendation to an ISP for phone access in France (not freephone number but cheap enough) I suggest Luxembourg On Line, www.internet.lu. It has no standing or usage charges (except the phone call in) and their help desk reply to emails very promptly.
Sounds like A:mad:L are going to lose £19-99 a month very soon - but that will be a fight because they are paid on a credit card "direct debit" and I've been told (by AOL) that one cannot cancel the payments by contacting the card provider.

just ring AOL - the card provider can't cancel it, but they can - just tell them to cancel your account - not that difficult, then you don't have to have the hassel of getting a new card . . . .0

I haven't double checked this but I still have a minimal dial-up service with Clara (as a backup and for newsgroups) and I believe that they actually operate out of France (or are linked to a French service in some way). I've used them since I very first went online about twelve years ago and have absolutely no complaints about their service. Their web address is http://www.uk.clara.net/.
They definitely aren't the cheapest out there, but I still continue paying a small amount each month because I really appreciate having one email address that, so far, I've never had to change and I host my very, very basic website through them.
