How do you know its not had 50 previous keepers?

And if it had, why would it matter? Do you honestly think that just because it's had one or two owners, that automatically means it's good?

What about a car owned by a sole trader registered in his name but every employee drives it at some point? It's had several different drivers but only has one keeper listed. Kind of screws up the whole "one keeper = good" argument, doesn't it?

My point was the buyer would have a choice. Many times traders have said one lady owner from new to get a sale.
  • I don't understand why the dealer was sending it off to be "updated in their name"

All they should've done was filled it out straight into your name as it has now added another keeper for no reason.

We never register any of our cars that we, as a garage run. We keep them in the original leasong company name and just use the V5/2 to get a tax disc.

As for the comment about about needing the V5 to tax it online. Yes you do, but that will send the tax disc to the current owner and not to you. Once you have the V5 in your name you can tax it online...

One lady owner from new = car that's mostly done short journeys never getting up to full temperature which does the bottom end no good, had the clutch slipped a fair bit, likely to have had the odd low speed shunt and is most likely to have pings and little scratches from supermarket shopping trolleys.

One lady owner from new is usually the car you want to be avoiding.

What does the number of owners have to do with anything? I've seen one owner cars that are sheds and ones that've had several owners in as many years which have been well maintained.

I've just bought yet another 2 litre Capri that was a 1.6 and still has the 1.6 capacity and engine number on the V5. The Capri before this one was white having been resprayed in the previous 12 months yet still had the original colour blue on the logbook. A V5 is only as accurate as the information provided to DVLA.

And does anyone honestly expect to get decent aftersales service from a small dealership anymore?

A V5 merely provides you with a bit of paper which tells you the current registered keepers details, the DECLARED number of previous keepers, vehicle make, model, colour, engine size, taxation class, engine and chassis numbers and taxation class on it. Virtually all of those you can get from a HPI check.

Point is Conor that as has been said the dealer should have had the log book at hand. The commomest reason for not having one is such as when the car has come in from the auctions as either a repossession or a car with something of a chequered past. Not saying that such cars aren't a good deal, but you really want to be knowing about it.

If a car has changed hands many times in a short time it kind of indicates that the previous owners has been dissapointed in it in someway, or that it may have proved unreliable.

All information that at least I require as a buyer:p ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
