Sky+ box

Why can Sky be so annoying?

On Saturday my Sky+ box broke. I tried unplugging it, changing the LNB cables and the batteries etc. It doesn't work.

I spent 30 mins on the phone to an outsourced call centre, for them to agree that "it's broke". Surely if a customer cannot work the box then it doesn't take 30 mins to agree?

Once they had agreed it was broke they asked for £65 to fix the box, despite the fact it is less than 6 weeks over a year old !!

At that point I told them I expected a free fix, as the box is pretty much only a year old, and I pay them nearly £600 a year !

Idiot operator said "no" !

Anyway called back, spoke to a UK call centre cancellation team person and said fix or lose £600 odd a year sub. She had enough intelligence to realise that if I have no box they earn no sub money :)

She arranged a next day fix, new dish, and a new HD box for free :)
Why couldn't they do this in the first place??

Surely no one is going to keep a sub going if the box doesn't work - especially as you can get Freeview, FreeSat, Virgin Media or BT as an alternative...

    Cos they can :)

So you climbed up the ladder to the LNB and changed the cables up on the dish?

Its that call centre, I rang up for multiroom she put me through to sales in england saying I wanted HD

And, thats the standard service call

    What makes you special seriously?

They charge to fix the box which is out of contract

Because you were probaly rude and technical wouldn't arrange this, Your locked into another 12 month contract

Or you could pay the £65 service call fee

Just to add before the "We hate edna" group comes along

We don't know the issue, most of the time they can be fixed using the engineer method, Where it "repairs" itself. or complete housekeeping on the box, If you read the book and supplementary information it does recommend you complete this every month to keep your box on tiptop condition.
  • I have no lock-in, although wouldn't mind as I want Sky's service. I am not prepared to pay £65 on top of the monthly sub.

A box is supposed to last longer than a year. Without a box it won't work. If they won't fix the box they get no sub. QED the sensible cancellations team offer to fix or replace the box :)

Total crap, You are locked into another 12 month contract as they won't give you a free box on month to month!

Boxes do last longer than a year, Ive had my PR3 since launch (3 years) and my PR4 since launch (last year) and except for a fault connection they both work fine.

Do you really think sky care, you either buy the content direct off them or off Virgin/Other provider they get the money anyway

Your box is out of service contract, end off issue, £65 is out of contract fee, You got lucky getting a free box

You still never answered me, Did you get a ladder climb up to the LNB take the cables off and route new cables to the box?

Its not an extra £65 a month, its a one off fee

Nonsense (as usual). My mums Sky box was 8 months out of contract. She called them when it stopped working, and they give her a new box totally free, fitted, with no new lock in.

How could she watch the service she pays for without it?

How come when I asked my neighbour who actually works for sky, and he said every replacement box comes with a new 12 month commitment, and its not a "new" box its a recon unless you paid sky for a new box then there would be no lock in.

Perhaps he's like some of the Sky installers, who, when Sky pass on a job to them, they bring a new box....but swop with a refurbished....or when they do a "new" install....they use an existing dish, keep the new one in the van, then sell it on....and before you say about your "neighbour" who may or may not be wonderful.....I know for a fact....and so do others on this web site....that this happens....

by the way, I live in a bungalow, and I can reach my LNB standing on a milk crate....and finally, just because something has "12 mths g'tee" doesnt mean to say it wouldn't be repaired or replaced even after the 12 months....it happens possibly more than you think.

"Just to add before the "We hate edna" group comes along"....do you make a habit of making posts that attract that type of feeling, perhaps you hate yourself for making these types of comments? Could it be you welcome the attention by being derisive to other posters? Does it make you feel wanted or needed?
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:

Exactly. If Sky want me to pay for their service, they should provide the equipment if the old one goes bang so close to the end of a year. My new box is a brand-spanker, not a refurb :)

You still haven't answered my question did you climb up to the LNB?

I connected a signal meter to it, and there was no problem with the signal.
This was verified by the Sky expert, who acknowledged that the 14 month box was FUBAR'd :)
