Early years Nursery funding

  • do you realise that you wont be eligible until the new term after your child turns 3? gg x
  • Ouch! That was a little harsh. Many people need to work to pay the bills rather than climb a ladder.

I thought so too Fourcandles - perhaps smithyjules has little empathy/experience with this?!
  • i do indeed work/struggle/juggle like many others in this current climate.i also have a 2 year old daughter so i do empathise about childcare costs...however i am a nursery nurse and appreciate the value of early learning and will be greatful for any assistance when it comes to my daughters education/development, not critical that this assistance doesn't come in the form that suits me. it is for my daughter after all.
  • oh poo i've just re-read this thread and feel pants about how i reacted. i was rude and i appologise.
  • Thanks smithyjules
Was reading through the posts catching up from yesterday and felt a bit wounded I have to say!
I don't have a "career". I work 4-8pm as a data entry clerk because I have to. My husbands hours were recently cut so I have no option but to work.
I certainly don't look at this as free childcare. We initially entered my child into this nursery to give my Mum a break and we thought it would help his social skills and with his talking which he was behind with at the time.
I guess I feel annoyed that people who DON'T have to work can send their child whenever they feel like it whilst I have to continue paying. (And, if I paid for it myself it would take 30% of my take home pay!)

Thanks everyone for the comments and help. My mum says she and Dad will continue to pay and I will have to see if I can do an hours overtime here and there when he is at nursery in the mornings (using the "free" sessions then!)

The amount of Early Years funding you get depends on how many "sessions" the child attends - so you'll get less if they attend twice a week than if they attend five days a week. We get £144 a month discount on our nursery fees, and our boy attends 9am-4pm Mon-Fri. And we only started getting this in September, when he turned 3 in May.
  • My daughter who is 3 attends nursery 2.5 days a week when I am at work and I pay for wraparound care, so over lunchtime not sure of specific hours and then 3-6pm and I have found it has saved me over half what I was paying without the free sessions, so surely you cant be worse off?? I think you are lucky that you have parents that are able to look after your son and pay for you childcare, because a lot of people dont have that and have to pay for full childcare. When I went back to work after having my second dd I was paying out 2/3rd of my salary on childcare, and although a lot of people would say it's not worth working I had no option because we could not afford for me not to.

Could your son not attend 5 free sessions over the full week so that instead of doing 2 full days your parents have him all week but get 2.5 hours in the day when he is at nursery? I know full days are probably easier though.

My situation is slightly different. I work 4-8pm and he goes to nursery 3-6pm. I simply cannot afford to work during the day and pay for childcare. EVERY penny of my monthly wage is accounted for which is why my very generous parents pay for the nursery at the moment.

Obviously I was wrong to question this. I will carry on as I am. At least I'm not flinging the towel in on my job and going on benefits. Sorry, but I'm a bit bitter about this!

Could your son not start his nursery session at 1pm to get his funded sessions, therfore maybe giving you the opportunity to up your working hours, but at no extra cost?

    Hi Dangers

Yes, this is something I will do in the future. At the moment he still has a really good nap between 2 and 3.30. He refuses to sleep at nursery and is then a nightmare later in the afternoon. But it is def something I am planning when he starts dropping that nap.

    Thanks

    Miss P
