So is there any software out there that prevents viruses/spyware guaranteed?

As what was said above. But the problem is people think that they are protected just having an AV software, but you need to make sure it is kept up to date as well. The common misconception is that if an AV program is good it keeps quiet, it's not the case, you only know when its working when you get a detection or warning showing you have a virus and its been dealt with.

I've had problems with Norton and McAfee in the past.

Another misconecption is the more regular an anti virus updates the better it must be! err....NO. What if it updated hourly but only updated it one threat at a time, but another updated daily but 50 threats at a time.......

    I vote ESET

Seconded. Just testing NOD Smartsuite 4 Beta and it's even better.

I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. I know people who have bought AV software and never updated it. Updates with the automatic update or cumulative weekly updates are more than sufficient.

You would have to be some sort of freak to update on a hourly basis.

I suggest you check this website that gives an independent review of AV solutions...it only tests paid for products, but lots of the companies in the test do stripped down free products also of their pay for products, but still uses the same scan engine to detect viruses

I recommend and use the Avira free product
    Mortgage when started: £127,500
    Current mortgage Jan2016: £127500
    Mortgage free day: Dec 2022
    OverPaid so far; £0
  • Having used AVG from the start of my internet use which is probably about ten years I have always used AVG. I started with the free version but updated to the paid for version which has all you need when I went on broadband, spyware, adware, anti spam, firewall and in fact everything. I would say be cautious with the free one as it does NOT include all the modules that the paid for one does plus you cannot expect the customer service with the free one. All in all I would say this is probably the best one and it updates and scans regularly, like every day. I have stuck with it all this time.

Anything will be an improvement over V3 .....can`t even make the top 10 in VB tests.....and your running a Beta.
Always follow the path of least resistance.
  • Good reviews of a host of anti-virus and firewall software..

That link doesnt work (Dont ask me why, ive tried to link it myself :p)

Its a shame they dont compare the free versions too, as some free ones dont include MALWARE in their scans etc
