Suggestion for a sticky

This is a great board and I've been finding it really helpful for advice as we get closer to getting a new cat or kitten to replace our 23 year old lady we lost last year. However it's a little hard to find all the info as you've got to choose your search terms well.
I expect there are a lot of readers like me who are considering getting a new pet and I wondered if it would be helpful to have all the key advice in one place; for example where is the best place to get a cat/dog, when do I vaccinate, do I need to chip my pet, what about neutering and maybe a check list of everything to think about before you get your pet??? As I said all this info is on the board but just a little hard to distil sometimes. I didn't mention insurance as I think that thread has all the info you need in one place.
What do people think about the idea of a sticky and what info would you want to give to a potential new pet owner who comes onto MSE for advice?
Best wishes

Hi
You can find all this info on the RSPCA and CPL website. The RSPCA has fact sheets in the pet care section such as microchipping, vaccs etc..
http://www.rspca.org.uk/
I do agree with you but they won't have a sticky section for advice because advice is not money saving.0 -
Thanks Kimberley. Actually it was the monseysaving aspect of all those questions that interested me and why I come to MSE for such advice, rather than say RSPCA or CPL.
Some excellent recent posts of this board have included info on the wide range of prices quoted in a local area for the same course of vet treatment, the CPL neuturing vouchers have been mentioned, where to get bulk supplies cheaply etc.
Perhaps I should have been clearer in my OP but it is the mse slant on this which I think we should do as you just don't easily find such info elsewhere.:j Go on, shake your money maker! :j0 -
I know what you mean, sometimes I can't be asked to look back on past threads.
I'm on your side, but will they listen? No

Oh I'm am an optimistic type of gal, if there is a need for such a post then I'm sure it would become a sticky. But if there isn't then I for one wouldn't want such a post clogging up the top of the thread.
I guess the only way we'll find out is if a lot of helpful mse style advice gets added to this thread.
So over to everyone else on this board then

This isn't my board so obviously not up to me
But my view is that it's very easy to get too many stickies... then it's hard to browse the board for the current threads and in turn we get complaints that the board has too many stickies
It's a "damned if we do and damned if we don't" situation
A lot of the time the BGs on this board are very understanding about leaving threads to run even if they don't have a stricktly money saving theme, because it can be a very emotional board.
Creating more stickies and one so broad as what is suggested is not as lightly a decision to be made as you might think
So personally I'd rather see individual threads saying "where is the cheapest place to neuter in xyz" and so on. For advice on what you mentioned in your first post then you'd be better off on a general pet forum than one looking at the MSE side of it
Places like dogspages (loathe them as I do...) or the (in my view) much better Refuge. Google either and they should pop up.
There is no one answer to the "where to get a pet" - most will say rescue, but how do you choose a rescue? well that depends on you and your family and the pet in question... some people don't want rescue and then the best place is a breed specific forum - so there is no one answer...
Personally... I'd say a thread like this would quickly become outdated and never be specific enough - but that is just my view
