I think people are being quite harsh - it is not that easy at the moment ot get another job. I should know, I have been laid off and all I'm hearing is 'you don;t have relevant experience' - even for an industry which is virtually teh same as the one I worked in for 12 years!

Employers can pick and choose right now and they are doing so - and I haven;t seen any seasonal work advertised round my way at all.

I've posted on every job website I can find, sent my CV to agencies, applied for jobs, and all I have is one telephone interview.

I've worked all my life, am well-educated, have a multitude of transferable skills ... and no-one wants me.

It really isn;t that easy to get a job at the moment, not even a cr.a.ppy job.

  • Hi,
Take a deep breath, you will get through this... It's not the best time of the year for this to happen, but he's certainly not alone, it's happening to tons of people..
On the up side, this is a fab time to get a job... What about royal mail, they recruit massively over the festive period and the pay is not too bad either.. Agencies, restaurants, pubs, health clubs, door stewards, PR etc... It may not be what he wants, but on a temp basis it's at least something..
I work for a nursing agency, the shifts are crap just now, but i'm taking what i can just to get by. it's not ideal but it's money..
    Good Luck!!
It will work out hun, chin up ;)

If it were me I would start at one end of Regent or Oxford St and work down it.
I'd be astounded if I didnt have a job at the end of it.

Unless they live in walking distance to those areas that doesn't make that much sense. Transport costs will be high to get in and out of zone 1. Shelling out £100pm on a travelcard is the equivalent of 2-3 days wages in a retail job.

If he is looking for lowish paid work then he should initially focus on his local high street and surrounding areas. That way he'd also be able to do more hours/2nd job as he wouldn't be wasting time commuting either. I've seen a few stores in Kingston and Wimbledon looking for seasonal staff at the moment, if that's any help.

And anyone looking for work with an eye on long-term job security should seriously consider checking if Aldi/Lidl have any vacancies in their area. I can't think of a more recession proof job and they are known for paying well, Aldi's graduate area manager programme has a £40k starting salary.

EmmieT it mightn't be his thing but Lidl are looking for a Property Acquisitions Manager for their Wimbledon office. It wouldn't hurt to take a look as he was working in construction, so it mightn't be too far off his old job.

I think your landlord would prefer to let you out of the tenancy than have you trun into a bad debt, so I would have that conversation. Don't listen to any claptrap about early get out fees, just tell em you are skint. They'd rather have you go willingly than have to evict you!

If it's the debt that is criplling you, and you can dealwith a poorer credit rating for a while (sounds like you are a way off getting/ needing a mortgage anyway) try Payplan or CCCS for a debt management plan - full details and answers to your qs over at the debt free wannabe board. If it's huge debt, they can also help with IVAs/ bankruptcy questions.
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
