Barclays help?! please

Options
ok so i had an account with the woolwhich which my gran opened for me as a baby (am now 21)
woolwich has since switched to being barclays.

I only discovered i had this account about a week ago.
So i set up online banking for it, and opened one of their E-Savings account, with a standing order set up to transfer £1 every 3 months from my original barclays account to the savings account..with me so far?

So i popped into a branch the other day and deposited £5 in the current account, to cover the standing order payment for this month...thats all fine and has been deposited into the savings account.

Then today i come home from college to recieve a letter from Barclays which reads:

Your new Current Account Plus....
A big welcome from Barclays, your account is now up and running.
We just need a few more details from you, so that we can activate the following services:

Extended Warranty: when you buy a new domestic appliance, call us with the make and model
Cardholder Protection: You can register your cards, as well as your driving lisence and passport.

Simply phone us on (phone #) - the sooner you call us, the quicker you'll be covered. It should only take a few minutes, and will make ure you get the most out of the £3 monthly fee you pay for this account.

ok first a £3 monthly fee? I don't have any money going into that account at all! So how can they charge me a £3 monthly fee, when they never did for 20 years?

The letter starts with your NEW current account plus, it's the same account i always had, and just forgot about!

And as for the Extended Warranty and Cardholder Protection, i don't need any of these things, i live with my mum, so i don't buy big things like freezers, washing machines...etc. I don't know how to drive either!

Any ideas what this is all about?

  • Best to contact them and tell them you don't require an account with fees or benefits.

Ask them to change it to the Barclays Bank account which has no monthly fee.

They changed the terms and conditions of your account... quite legit. Upto them what they do with their accounts. Don't like it? Go elsewhere and close it.

Not really. Changing a free account into one that costs money without informing the customer is a bit of a !!!!!! move.

    OP: call Barclays.

Sounds like someone in branch has upgraded your account without you knowing, probably to get one of their sales targets.
  • Move to a free account, you don't have to have an account where you pay a fee. I have one of the accounts where i pay £14.50 a month for the extra's like travel insurance and cheaper stockbroking but if you don't need it get moved to a free one instead. :)
  • Thanks everyone, phoned today and got the account back to a basic account!

Ask why you were put on that account, as you have no recollection of asking for it. The branch should be able to provide a signed copy of an "ADDACK" letter to show you agreed to the charge.

If not, then the seller has breached sales standards and you should pursue this as a complaint.

  • Question for BarclaysManager. When you open a current account at Barclays does it do an Unrecorded Enquiry or a hard credit search?

Its a normal credit search seen by other lenders
