D&DD, you are a wonder to me!!What do you use malt extract in? (I mean apart from my christmas pudding recipe
)
The only malt extract I ever saw was in big jars labelled 'Cod Liver Oil and Malt' or Virol, and my mum used to force feed us a BIG spoonfull each every friday night, eugh! one of my sisters used to queue up for a second spoonful _pale_ so I suppose I would put malt extract under the label 'vaguely medicinal' :rotfl:... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

ooh yes mine used to do that too :rotfl: supposed to build me up  never worked tho!!
I use it in an old recipe for malt loaf hang on will find it...
Malt Loaf
3oz malt extract
2 oz soft brown sugar
1 oz butter
8 oz wholemeal flour
2 tspns baking powder
1/4 tspn salt
1/4 pint milk
1 oz currants
1 oz sultanas
1 oz mixed peel ** I just use 3 oz of sultanas instead of all these 3 **
Put malt extract, sugar and butter into a pan and heat gently til butter has melted.Cool to lukewarm.
Mix flour and b.powder and salt in a bowl and pour in malt liquid.
Beat well and add milk and fruit.
Put into a well greased 1lb loaf tin.(I usually line as its rather sticky and my tins are knackered)
Bake at 160c,325f,gas mark 3 for 1 1/2 hrs.
Keep an eye on it though as it sometimes needs a bit of foil on top
Variations are:-
Malt date loaf
omit fruit and peel and sub with 4oz chopped dates
Malt orange loaf
omit currants and sultanas, increase peel to 3 oz and add 1 tspn grated orange rind
Malt walnut loaf
Sub fruit and peel for 3 oz chopped walnuts
Malt fruit and nut loaf
omit peel and sub with 2 oz chopped mixed nuts
Also
Malt Bread is nice

1/4 pint + 3 tblsns of warm water
1 pck easyblend yeast

I'm just thinking, that I have lots of microwave recipes, mostly from the 70's and from the Home and Freezer Digest, the best magazine a tree ever gave its life for. :j
Does anyone think a thread of just microwave recipes would be useful?
I'll start the thread if need be (could use the Christmas pud recipes!) and I'll index it in the Complete Cookery Collection. I have a few threads there already but they are specific recipes.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I'd definitely be interested in microwave recipes -- can't remember the last time I used mine to microwave "cook" something (other than the odd ready meal heat up, or elder DS heating up a meal I've plated up for him, or the sachets of flavoured porridge, or warming up milk)
It does get used though fairly regularly though, 'cos it's a combi oven. If I need a convential oven for small quantities of something I always use my combi in preference to my main oven -- heats up much quicker, so I figure it has to use less power (they're both electric fan ovens, so I'm comparing like with like -- and the combi is actually the older oven by about 6 months). And it's FAB for jacket potatoes -- much quicker than a convential oven, but the jacket is closer to one cooked in a convential oven than a microwaved one

CW I use mine to start off jackets too
Rosie I'd love to see some ideas I use ours for
1/Wheatabix for DS2
2/Jacket spuds
3/defrosting when I [STRIKE]ALWAYS[/STRIKE]rarely forget to get dinner out
the freezer
4/reheating 'stuff'
5/Microwave meringues
6/scrambled and poached eggs
and thats about it..considering the space it takes up I'm sure I can put it to better use.0 -

I tend to forget that I can use the combi for one smaller item, even though I use the combi feature for jackets and for wedges.
While we're on electicity....Mr Ivy and I were studying the gas/electric bill yesterday evening. It seems that we are £350+ CR on the gas  so right now I'm waiting for their customer service to open so that I can try and get it put right. As dh said, why should we be loaning them that sort of money?"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Thats exactly what my Dad says Purple
You've just reminded me to ring Eon as we're about the same in credit woohoo!!:j
We had a bloke from Npower knock last night and he was sooo pushy, really annoyed me.Wouldn't take no for an answer that I knew what my rates were etc, ended up taking the laptop out and sticking it up his nose to show him my online bill :rotfl:
went on about how all my neighbours had switched so I just said "well more fool them! They are going to find you cheaper because they all have key meters.I pay mine DD and get discounts for doing so as well as having dual fuel etc."
All he kept harping on about was giving me £100 to switch and I kept saying but I get over that a year in discounts PLUS my Clubcard points and the rate is better
He looked a bit peeved when he left...0 -
You'd have thought he would recognise when he was onto a loser and go and pester his next [STRIKE]victim[/STRIKE] potential customer."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I think he was just thick Purple :rotfl:
He was just so shocked that I could turn down £100 just like that, even though I explained to him,£100 would have been nice but it would have cost me twice as much to have switched.
Then he tried to tell me they wouldn't charge for gas delivery..we have a charge on all our properties on the estate as Wimpey did a 'deal' with Transco to run the pipes from the pavement to our houses and it costs us £6.99 a month
It has been investigated and basically found to be lawful so we ALL have to pay it but oh noooo Npower say No we wouldn't... ,how many people has he given the wrong info to?? I sat on the commitee that investigated it so I think I would know0
