There were lots of kids from wealthy families at dd's school. They could be really sniffy about labels and stuff, but loads of her friends just wanted some home baking for their birthday present. Many was the night when dd would come down after homework 10pm at night and start baking for her friends' birthdays. They just loved the homemade stuff, she would make their favourites.

2 yrs ago at Christmas she and our German girl, who was with us for the term, made a gingerbread house for their German class. Then Spanish class got jealous, so she made a chocolate swiss roll in the shape of a bull LOL!

There was a gingerbread tree and a ginger Hansel and Gretel somewhere.

  • the very best present we got last year was a jar of hm chilli jam from our ds and I agree re the hm gifts, they are the nicest sort of present. There is something very comforting to think that someone thinks enough of you to spend time, on making a gift, as time is far more precious than any amount of money.

I was furious yesterday, sitting talking to one of my 'new mums' on the ward when a pile of visitors arrived. One said "I won't kiss you I've got flu" . Well of course she hadn't got flu or she wouldn't be there but I gave her a good telling off for bringing germs into the hospital.

"But she's my sister, I wanted to see the baby" was the excuse......... have people no sense at all. Some of our babies are very small and poorly and a nasty cold could be the last straw to their system!!

    OK rant over!!

you are a wonderful person, and NannaC feels honoured to know you. Your words are so true. We lost a very precious little grandbaby just over three years ago. He was very tiny but such a fighter. He lived for just three weeks. My everlasting regret is that two of his uncles never got to see him as they both has colds at the time. I too had a rant on the ward as one of the nurses had a streaming cold, I challenged the sister who said they were short of staff. I know she did not nurse our little one but I really think she should have been sent home. All the family were torn between wanting to see him [a new baby is a little miracle] and not wanting to pass anything on to him. When my own were born in the early 70's we had a sergent major of a nurse who guarded the ward doors and at the slightest sniffle/sneeze visitors were turned round.

    Good morning!

Thanks for everyone sharing their favourite ways to spend ME time! What a lot of simple pleasures we all seem to find, I feel all warm and glowy now lol!

Nanna - I look forward to reading your report! Sounds like you have a great time with your grandkids, I wish mine had a nanna like you, but there is a distinct lack of interest from either gran!

mummysaver :j You have made my year.:j If we lived near each other I would be so proud to be an honoury nanna to your little ones.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Our order from approved foods turned up yesterday, the box was huge!!!
Luckily dh was out until I had unpacked it all!;) I have just about found room for it all including the curry sauces, 6 pkts herbal teas for £1 :j dry roasted peanuts (huge 600g bag for £1) fizzy drinks, ribena drinks (12 bottles of 95p)
crispy seaweed (20p) mini pringles and more sardines! Just have a lot of cardboard boxes to find homes for now!:D

DD is ill with a sickness bug and DS has full blown flu and is flat on his back with it, I agree how can folk call a bad cold flu  flu is far far worse and ds had the vaccine only a couple of weeks ago! Must have been for another strain.

DD has asked if we can have an old fashioned Christmas, full of home made goodies and far away from the comercialised ideals being advertised at the moment, that's ok then, as that is just what I have been attempting to do and try to do every year as I find it very comforting in times of trouble(hm cake, puds, mincemeat, cookies and soon hm sweeties bring back happy memories of Christmas's past:xmassmile )

I have parcels to post today which will have to go first class now (ouch) but my lovely sister is worth it!
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

D&DD - I'll stick the kettle on, prob best if you wear that surgical mask or at least the balaclava given the germs round here! Sometimes it's easier to get on if they're ill, they spent most of the day asleep or just slumped in front of the fire, they didn't need feeding and there were no school runs! Glad the shower is a go. Congrats to ds1 on all his awards.

nannaC - if you fancy moving to Somerset then we'll be round! For wool, have you looked in your local small hospice type charity shops, ours often have baskets of wool, think they have to keep the needles under the counter as they can be considered dangerous though lol! Or try requesting some on freecycle, it can be amazing what people have around and would like to go to a good home. I was sorry to read about your little grandbaby, things like that never ever leave you.

Reverbe - your gifts for your friend sound lovely, I do know what you mean about adding something bought though to "make it up". I now have got over this though, I find that if you present your hm gifts beautifully then they are even more appreciated - I get family and friends to pass on all the boxes and wire bottle holders and bits that shop bought preserves come with! Have you seen the Snowman Soup that is on the celebration thread, someone gave these with her Christmas cards, they are fantastic, I would love to have received one, my dds want to make them for their friends for next year! Gives me a year to find the bags!

Purple - what a fantastic picture! My dd2 loves making cakes and often takes them in, dd1 has now started to do it as well. ds also takes cakes in, but being a prototype Arthur Daly, he sells them!

Candy - I loved all the tiny knitted cardies and jumpers and booties and hats that I was given when mine were babies, they were sooooo small and lovely! dd3 now uses them for her dolls. Hope your dd is settled into her new home now and that all the problems with it have been sorted out.

Today I need to finish off some hm gifts, emergency kits (mentioned these to some friends and they want to do them for their boyfriends and husbands!) and need to print off the diary questions and find a pretty jar, sure I had one somewhere, prob filled it with pickle though lol! I'm really into all these hm things at the mo, they all look so good, and the peeps on the celebrations thread have fantastic ideas for presentation, well worth a look if anyone hasn't been over there! Shame that there's no way of knitting up a laptop or ds or mobile phone, now that would be impressive!

Catznine - an old fashioned Christmas sounds lovely, you have reminded me about sweets though, I was going to make some tablet, must get some condensed milk later! I had a Scottish friend at school and she always used to give us some for Christmas, oooh it was delicious, don't remember any complaints about hm gifts either! My children have never had it, as I haven't made it since before they were born, so I though they'd like to give it a try!

    !

LOL! I guess he does rather well, in this day and age where anything sweet is banned from tuck shops and vending machines. I have to say that at Youth Orchestra tuck shop they do a roaring trade in toast on a Saturday morning. You should see those lads put it away!
