Mummysaver re the tomatoes I grew 8 cherry tomato plants this year and stuck them in hanging baskets and got TONS off them.I dehydrated them all *they slice neatly into 3-4 slices*..mindnumbingly boring after the umpteenth lot BUT I dried the 'ends' seperate and ground them into powder to use as paste for tomato puree and the slices are rehydrated and used as you would for tinned but the tatse is sooo much stronger you only need a few..
Perfect for chucking into the slowcooker too :D

I bought a dehydrator earlier in the year. I'm ashamed to say, it's still in its box!

:DYategirl & Ceridwen the american sites don't recommend storage in oil due to the acidity levels in stuff..the lack of acid is what leads to all the nasties so thats why stuff is pickled etc.
I know I read it somewhere..there was a big foodscare in the US due to spoiled garlic in oil.
The companies who make/sell these process the stuff to oblivion first before they store them in the oils so they are generally safe:D

I usually dehydrate my tomatoes then stick them in the freezer as I get less spoilage that way,our home is too warm to keep them in jars for long no matter how much I dry them out. They are ok for short term storage in jars/tupperwares but for long term, over 3 months or so I freeze as it helps to keep the colour too ;)

Apples...I use one of those corer/segmenter things then I drop these in 1/4 cup lemon juice to 1 cup water then dry til they are dry on the outside and around half the usual size.I then cool them off on paper towel then layer them in tubs on easyleave or greasproof before freezing.I do around enough for 1 pie in each layer then just rehydrate in a little boiling water before use.

lol your hubbys comment was rather restrained compared to mine when I first took the cupboard over :rotfl: He has however been grateful for my stores on many occassions since so I don't get hassled any more :D
Glad to hear you got the car sorted but oh boy that's a lump to shell out just before xmas :(

D&DD, your cupboard space reminds me of the walk-in clothes wardrobe in Sex and the City! Stunning, awesome! I am so envious (in the best possible way of course)!

  • Missed reading this thread for a few days and its taken me ages to catch up. So many posts!! Big congratulations to the mums to be, and big hugs to everyone who needs them.

D&DD- your store cupboard is amazing. I am very jealous.

I saw this comment on an article in todays Observer newspaper

"Britain's supermarket giants have drawn up emergency plans for how they would cope if scores of suppliers go bust next year. Asda is working on a "worst-case" scenario. An executive at the supermarket said: "Suppliers are under a lot of pressure and there will be casualties." (Observer)" (from thefirstpost.co.uk)

I am really pleased that I found the Old Stylers and have been stashing groceries away. I have an order coming from Mr T's on tuesday. I think I might add a few more tinned stuff to the list.

d&dd your store cupboard looks fantastic. Much more organised than nannaC's which is in our attic. To save Grumpy Grandads legs however I do have a 'Come the Revolution Book' that lists everything that is stored. GG duly studies this before I make my shopping list. I wrote down the prices paid by each item and it is frightening how much things have gone up by in the past six months.

On a lighter note NannaC took her little grandbabies [that term does'nt half embarrass the elder ones] plus Lucy the dog on our annual Father Christmas outing today. We have a wonderful old stately hall in our town that was given to the people of the town by the family just over 100 years ago [we are very proud of our hall]. :A Every Christmas the staff, rangers, friends of the hall society arrange a Father Christmas treasure hunt. Its a truly magical day, I always park at the bottom of tha Holmes [near my old school] then we all walk up to the hall alongside the river, playing pooh sticks at both bridges. The little ones then get a choice of hot chocolate or ice cream. They choose the latter this year and I foolishly said they could have any ice cream they wanted BIGGGGGGGGG mistake. 5 grandbabies all chose an enormous double cornet of vanilla/chocolate ice with flake and strawberry topping [I didnt know they made ice creams that size], they were nearly as big as them. We were one of the first customers so the lovely young man that served us only charged £8 for all 5 ices plus flake for Lucy. We then did our PR bit as we wandered up the Holmes towards the Hall with our ices and when I looked back a little later he had a long que waiting to be served not bad for the middle of December. The treasure trail was brilliant [despite the ranger saying tell Nanna she is in trouble this year as we have put all the clues on different trees] we actually found them all 1st time in 5 years [espionage is not going to be a career choice for any of my lot as they ran about shouting FOUND ONE at the top of their voices at each clue found]. We then went to the servants Hall to see the main man. The magic never fails 5 awe struck children, all were given a selection box with the promise of wee will be good HMMMMMMM:rolleyes: . Then it was time to go back down the holmes to the car, playing Pooh trunks [huge sticks] on the way.:T
  • I wouldn't stockpile at the moment, a lot of the prices for basics are high at the moment, let's wait and see what happens in January!
