Welcome BB1984, this is a great thread with some lovely people so I'm sure you'll find good company.

Interesting reading this, and in other places, that it seems as though it's the lower paid jobs, working with those most disadvantaged such as adults or children with learning disabilities that seem to be going first. In my case I work with people with mental health problems and learning disabilities and am now down to one session a week (which actually equates to working voluntarily by the time I've paid for petrol to get there!!) A friend of mine working with adults with LD has also just been made redundant as the service is being incorporated into something else and another friend tells me that creche facilities have been removed from an education facility for young mums which means most will be unable to attend now so that whole service will go soon. Having worked in local authorites, the NHS and the Civil Service, I know there are plenty of people who are there having been there since leaving school and are maybe in their 50s now, just being given little tasks to do because it would cost too much to get rid of them. It seems so wrong but it's easier to get rid of those of us who have millions of skills and qualifications but chose to work with people with extra needs on near minimum wage.

I'm going to a course this afternoon, it's free but will again cost me a lot in petrol which doesn't get reimbursed. But you have to keep your hand in somehow because who knows, something might just turn up!

    ...ever the Pollyanna...

GreenQueen - so sorry to hear double whammy with the jobs (((hugs)))

Hester - hope you manage to find a lodger soon x

we're just waiting to find out what cutbacks there may be at work - DH is not happy in his jobbut cant leave as there's nothing at all around here at the moment and now my 18 year old DS needs to find something as he's finished his college course. We live in a small town with little public transport so his chances aren't looking good.

Might be a good idea as has already been said to start a new edition of the thread:T

Greenqueen - I'm so sorry about your OH's job. Redundancy is a lonely and frightening experience. I remember back in the 80's when my OH was made redundant for the first time. It was a more uncommon experience then and many colleagues avoided you like the plague, fearing it might be contagious. Now that it has become a more common experience over the years, and especially in the current finantial crisis, I think there is a lot more sympathy and understanding about the process. I hope another job appears soon. Meanwhile, stay on here for some moral support. Many of us have been there too, so you'll be among (virtual) friends.

my DS has one more year at college - he's on a 3 year joinery course - but the chances of getting a job aren't great at the moment. He has a part time job at MacDonalds...but wants a career related one soon - he doesn't like the conditions at MacDonalds.......

So sorry to all those who have just received bad news...hugs to all. If you are signing on do ask at your local job centre about possible free training...I know it's funded in some areas because that's what I do for my job [although with funding cuts quite possibly in the not too near future...we shall wait and see]

On a completely different note, tonight at 9pm BBC2 there's the Victorian Pharmacy. Shall sit there with notebook in hand..never know what you might learn:D

OMG my hubby got home tonight and said his post is going the week after next! Neither of us has ever been unemployed in all our adult lives.

Talk about adding insult to injury!

Maybe the two of you can sit down and work out a plan - perhaps a change of career for one or both of you, or something like that? Being optimistic, this could be an opportunity for something good? Fingers crossed something works out for you. In the meantime I am sure you will have picked up many ideas on saving money on here.

    All the best!
