Hi Jo-Rourke
You could try growing chillies on your window sill, although it is too late to sow any now. You might be able to find some plants in a garden centre, or ask on freecycle if anyone has any spare.
Also, you could try growing salad leaves and oriental leaves. The other thing you could do is buy seeds for sprouting (a good health food shop should have a selection). That way you would always have something fresh to put in salads. Sprouting seeds doesn't require any compost, either.
Be aware that with flowering plants such as chillies you may have to self-pollinate them using a paintbrush or cottonbud if there are no insects around to pollinate them for you (not sure if you can get self-fertile chillies or tomatoes, my gardening knowledge doesn't stretch that far!).
Hope this helps.Aspire not to have more but to be more.

Sprouting seeds is great - you can do it in a jam jar, and use pretty much anything pea-like that you've got in your cupboard. Mung beans are a particular favourite of mine, aduki beans and lentil also work well. Just soak them for 12 hours, drain them and leave to sprout. I rinse mine once a day, they take 3-4 days to be ready, and are really nice added to salads.Say what you mean.. mean what you say... without being mean.0

Some varieties of salad leaves can be sown pretty much all year round, I think. I'll fish some of mine out and have a look at the packets if I can remember. Or you could go to a local garden centre and have a look at their seeds.
Be warned though - once you get started it's very addictive!!Aspire not to have more but to be more.
