What industry do you work in, Rach?

I work for the Connexions Service - a 'quango' the Tories have their beady eyes on. I have spent an age (mainly due to having dd in the middle) getting a specific qualification that I HAD to get to do my job that will become totally worthless...ho hum

I guess that there are a fair few, if not a majority of us on here, that have had to belt tighten more than once, have been made redundant more than once and so on and so on. I know where maryb is coming from though, some of the hardest times have the happiest/funniest memories. Its amazing how when you really have your back up against the wall, you just grit your teeth and get on with it, not always pleasant I agree and you certainly know your alive. Everyday becomes a battle to survive, no cash equals no food and no bills paid, how do we get through it? I suppose it is with the courage and dignity that makes us fight back. We were first hit by the 1980s recession, we had 1 tiny baby and a toddler and DH was made redundant twice in two years. He was the breadwinner as I was a SAHM. It was horrendous, 'Spam' featured heavily in every dinner. I spent hours making logs out of old newspapers to burn on the fire, we burnt so much paraffin that the whole house reeked of the fumes (had no central heating). We'd only had our house for a year or so and were hit with rocketing interest rates, it was a nightmare, but thirty years on we're still here thank God. Still struggling (seems to be a permanent thing) but happy enough, we laugh over the paper logs and paraffin and wonder if we will be doing it all over again. We worry about the interest rates rising but can do nothing about it and we worry about DH losing his job as he still the breadwinner. I hope your job will be ok rachbc and I hope others on here worrying will be ok too. Must get that stew recipe mardatha as I can't face another era of 'Spam' ginnyknit I already post on the O/S pleasures thread so it will be nice to have another angle on it, just not always easy to find many pleasures and 5 in one day is a miracle!

PS I am very proud of myself for just figuring out how to multi-quote!! :rotfl:

I'm feel very proud for you too :T having tried numerous times to do just that, only to have the one quote show up. It's a mystery, that's for sure. One (or I) would think that it involved clicking the multi quote this message bubble - but, apparently not! as I've tried that, and still end up with one message quoted. I would ask how you did it, but I'm a big pig-headed when it comes to asking how to do something :D simply because, if other people can work it out, I feel I should be able to as well. That trait has brought me a lot of heartache, as I'm not always the brightest toy in the playroom :rotfl:

God bless and love you Elizabunny :D your post brought tears to my eyes...we too have weathered some really tough times over the years but DH and I have grown closer pulling together to get through. Don't have a lot to shout about but I have a family and DH that have a price beyond gold :) I am thankful for them every day :)

Wouldn't hedgehog stew be a bit, you know, prickly?? Or do you shave it first and use the spikey bits as toothpicks?

Nah ! you can't really stew a hedgehog....the best way to cook a dead hedgehog is to roll it in clay soil until its got a thick clay overcoat on then pop it into your campfire for a couple of hours - when you crack open the clay ball all the spikes will stay embedded in the clay and you can tuck straight into the meat.

A rabbit makes a better stew.....
