Wild garlic is allium ursinum. It looks like shiny daffodil leaves with small pretty white flowers and masses of it grows in shady, damp conditions, near rivers etc. You can eat the leaves and the bulbs. It's not as strong as cultivated garlic but I don't like really like strong garlic taste anyway.

I don't know how you would cultivate it, I think it must just have blown into my garden. I suppose you could take some bulbs from the wild and plant them.

  • Well done to Mr F indeed! It's good to hear something positive for once. And well done to you, Frugalista, for being so supportive.

On the subject of foraging, I too have left the bramble that was growing beside the garage to see if it has any decent berries on it later. Some brambles have very odd berries that are just a couple of little blobs and some have proper blackberries. Apparently, there are loads of different species (?)

Also, we found a little sapling in the same neglected area (let's face it, nothing had been done for a very long time anywhere in the garden) which could be an apple. We're going to wait and see. You never know.

I like the idea of wild garlic, though. We have plenty of damp, woody places here. I might see if we can order some from somewhere. Any ideas? I'm not sure I want to pull up a wild one

Evening all. Hi patchwork quilt, I have recently planted some of this. I bought it from a garden centre for around £1.45 I think. You may be able to buy it locally or as you say order online. Mine seems to be going well, I have planted it in damp shady area of the garden. We were away for awhile over Easter and walked through a woodland where masses of this was growing, the smell was amazing and the flowers are quite pretty tooicon7.gif HTH

Well, OH has been to the Jobcentre to "sign off" - he starts his new job on 5th May :D.

So why do I suddenly feel sick and anxious? - I've got butterflies in my stomach and a permanant headache! I'm trying not to let him know how I'm feeling as he is positively beaming and so happy. I just feel really worried for some reason ....

Frugalista - I suppose in these circumstances it's a little normal to feel anxious because it's possibly hard to believe that your OH's good fortune will last, especially when the job market is deteriorating almost daily. All you can do is keep your spending in check and build up a reserve for a while in case the worst happens. Fingers crossed for your both that it won't.

    It sure does.

There is a patch locally the road runs through the middle of a wooded area it is in. You have to keep the windows shut and the air con off.

I can't stand the smell of garlic. It makes me feel sick and the wild stuff really stinks vile and makes me feel really sick
