I think there will be food shortages sonner or later. The world is already over populated. China is already buying up agricultural land in Africa. I think anyone who can grow some of their own should do so, thus creating more food and saving themselves some money.0

DH & I are horrible with plants, but I am determined that I am going to grow some food for our table, so I am going to spend time this winter reading up on anything and everything I can so I'm prepared. Even a small amount will make such a difference.MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0

Growing our own veggies -all in tubs n containers this year has saved us a fortune:T
I grew sooo many tomatoes that I have enough bags of roasted ones in the freezer to last until the season starts againthey make the most stunning pastas sauce..in fact we are having them with marscapone, salami and veggies in a pasta bake tonight :j
I really would urge everyone to give it a go.. it is so easy and can save you loads.. not just because you don't have as many veggies to buy -but because it means you don't have to nip to the shops for veggies (where extra things "fall" in the basket :rotfl: )
Im allready planning and plotting for next year..can't wait as everything tastes so much nicer-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
MrsMcAwber, I dont have a garden but I do have a set of outdoor staire which have 2 landings that can take pots where I grow flowers. Do you think that veggies could grow here? I'm a total novice when it comes to veggie growing.0

Just washed the dogs as they were a bit whiffy, did it in the shower too to save waterand towel dried them best i could - Rosie is sat right by the fire (it isnt on) and keeps looking at me with sad eyes - poor girly!
Getting my hair cut tonight but holding off on the colouring as cant afford it at the moment even though i get it at a reduced rate of £35 for a cut, colour and blow dry. Last time i had it done was August so im doing well
When i go food shopping this week i am going to stock up on some things like plum tomatoes and pasta etc what else is good to stock up on? Im always one for trying new things and im getting better at cooking - can now do Corned beef hash and cottage pie etc from scratch- this time last year i could barely make pizza lol and thats taking it out of the packet and popping it in the oven *embarrassed*

Yep, veggies will grow fine there..and at least it will be much harder for the slugs to get at them :rotfl:
If you do tomatoes just make sure you tie them to the rails well as the wind will attack them...
Im just pondering... if you have "railings" up the stairs you could even grow the shorter peas n beans as they will cling on to the bars ,
I have a garden but its army accomodation so I grew everything in tubs.. this is some of the stuff ... when it first started -all from seed ... a lot of it turned into triffids :rotfl: Its only my 2nd year at having a bash... but im addicted nowand it saves a fortune...
If you need any help -give me a yell -im certainly no expert ...but I will help where I can-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
To all my dear virtual friends who are struggling at the moment I hope things start to get better soon.
It just shows the scale of things when so many of us in such a small part of the world are being affected
Sending positive vibes to you all

There wont be food shortages. There is empty fields all over the country. Plus it doesnt help the Government is having this idea taking over fields so they can grow `oil` on it. Im sure little chubby Gordon Brown will make sure HE doesnt go short of food
My families always been Frugal. I read these post and think "we've been doing that for years"
All you guys here are skimping and saving. I saw my neighbour today go out in a top with no back in it, obviously she had the heating on, cos later i saw her open the window. What is the point
It just makes me angry you're all thinking the worst and some people just sit there with the heating on in next to nothing and have their head in the clouds.
Ok rant over with
Asda is good for low price stuff. They always have bread reduced and stuff. And i know Sainsburys has some veg on offer now for 50p :T_Jen_0 -
Heya everyone,
Just spent the last couple of hours reading a few threads and getting more and more SCARED of what may happen/ will happen next year.
I'm not sure if I am just working myself up over nothing - am holiday from work at the mo and keep worrying that they will get rid of me when I get back - almost thoght of going in today just to see :O
They are doing what they call "operational fitness reviews" which sounds scary, and we have been told that if another department needs help, we would be foolish not to offer our time as people that are not busy......
Good luck to all awaiting news, and to sarah for the baby (great namelol!) I am 27 and thought about maybe having kids in the next year or so, but at the moment it doesnt seem to make much sense.....

We've tried to stock up on the basics like flour, sugar, butter, salt, etc. Like D&DD we tend to stock up on things with a long shelf life when they are on offer. We've just purchased the long life milk on offer at Mr. T's 50p/liter. We have a ton of tinned toms & stock cubes. We also bought a lot of gravy granuals on offer. We've been trying to get tinned fruit and veg in the house as well. So the answer is anything that you eat regularly that will last! I think we've got about 3 months worth of food in the house now. This will come in very handy if one of us loses our jobs!
I am also starting to think about what we import in Britain - it is bound to get more expensive as the pound is dropping in value. So things like lentils, rice, and fruit are likely to keep increasing in price. Any one else with more knowledge have any other ideas on things that are likely to increase dramatically in price?0
