I've been to Morrisons today; the ad shows what seems to be a decent size bag of peas, but the 50p bag is a small one so not sure if its a real saving but my dsis bought one as she only has a small freezer.
Asda are selling petit pois at £1 per bag atm, I think it was a 1kg bag, worked out alot cheaper than buying any of the other packets of frozen peas.0 -
Things might be tough, but I am not stupid!! Rant alert
Nipped into Tesco, needed some bits for kids lunches, just happened to look a the cucumbers, kids love them in a roll. Yellow price ticket, reduced price, wait for it, they slashed 18p of the price and the cucumber was now.....
£1.25 Wow Tesco, you reduced the cucumber by 18p but I have never seen a cucumber so expensive in my life!! And no, I didn't buy it, actually the more I looked at other stuff, like the tinned tomatoes which they claim are "half price" at 48p, the madder I got and walked out of the shop..
I will have a good nosey in Aldi tomorrow morning after the school run for the veg.0 -
oh god i hate MrT with a passion rarrrrrrrrrrrr
good for you for saying no and shopping around! xx0 -
Hi guys not been on here for a while but i have been reading and am very sorry to hear about all the redundancies that people are experiencing at the moment, sounds like people are going through some very difficult times.
Things are ok here, but i think thats largely due to the constant scrimping and saving. I didn't put the gas and elec on much last week and have noticed the savings when inputting it into imeasure which is great.
You lot would also be proud of me as i did my first bit of homebaking at the weekend, using up lemon curd someone had bought me, in order to make some tarts. Was rather surprised by how cheap and easy baking is!!
I have also been stocking up a lot at the moment whilst things i normally buy are half price or buy one get one free.:j Live on £4500, £2531/£4500:T 101 in 1001 (52/101):j:beer::j

TG! not just me then!!!
I went food shopping this morning - just a little shop - fruit and veg plus some meat. Went to my fab greengrocers - closed... notice on the door that trading has ceasedWent to my fab butchers - closed... no notice so am hoping that it was just a one off... was FORCED into Mr T's... my £20 F&V&M shop was more than doubled!!!  I am not a happy bunny (and feeling v.sad for the greengrocer staff (and hoping the butcher staff will be ok)..
I think I now have sourced an alternative farmshop and I do know of an alternative butchers but I will have to drive to these which will put my costs upbut am SO annoyed at the people of my town who couldn't be bothered to walk round the corner to these shops and took the lazy route to Mr T's
sorry bit of a rant there0 -
Evening all.
Not posted for a couple of days as I have been away. Hugs to all of you facing worries and problems.
mumoftwo -I've seen those tomatoes in Mr T. I couldn't believe that if I had wanted to buy four cans at the price before they were 'half price' I would have had to pay nearly £4!!! Are they having a laugh or do they really think we are all completely mad or stupid, because we are not!!
I just can't wait untill we start to grow our own tomatoes again and I think I would rather remain tomatoless than pay those ridiculous prices. I think certain supermartkets think they have the upperhand at the moment, but times are changing rapidly and I always say 'the higher they fly, the harder they fall' and we won't forget how they ramped up the prices, just when we could have done with the 'every little helps'.
Not sure that DH suggestion to dig up the back lawn and grow veggies is such a good idea though -still if it comes to that, that's what we'll do.
I have now finished reading 'Nella Last's War' what an inspirational book and woman, but I did feel quite sad when I read the last part written by her son Cliff. Don't want to say anymore here in case any of you are still reading this book.Sealed Pot Challenge 7 Member 022 :staradmin:staradmin:staradmin

have to admit but I am getting quite 'pedantic' about pretty much only buying local food that is in season in the UK... yes... I do have to buy fruit which is often out of season and/or not local to the UK (though I try and buy it when it is in season even though not from uk) but veg wise... I do keep to my local and seasonal rule.
eliza - go for that veg patch! the taste of homegrown is far superior I can assure you plus that self-satisfaction of "I grew that!"0 -

sorry bit of a rant there
i've become increasingly disenchanted with all the supermarkets over the years, but MrT just takes the biscuit i'm afraid. we shop there when we absolutely HAVE to, but our main shopping comes from either the farmshop, butcher, or fishmonger... and the local corner shop.
i too, am so angry with the people who'd drive the 11 miles to tesco (from where we are it's 11 miles), but not the 2.3 miles to the farmshop... probably because the spuds there are 'dirty ones'
it'll only be when the last independant shop has closed, and all the supermarkets pull rank and up their prices 200%, and we have no choice but to shop there.. that people will be kicking theirselves! :rolleyes:0 -
I'd LOVE to have a farmshop in easy reach -- but the closest is more than twice the distance from home to Mr T. I can (providing I don't need much or anything heavy) walk to Mr T and back (about 3.5 miles round trip), but I'd have no choice other than to drive the 8m round trip to the farmshop.
Our local butcher disappeared overnight almost 2 years ago (the next closest isn't much further than Mr T, but the choice is very limited even if you get there early -- and the prices are mostly higher than Mr T!), and I find that very little of the produce from our local greengrocer keeps for more than 24 hours
I've now started to get most of our veggies (and a lot of our meat) from the Whoopsie sections of our local C00p or S'flds (other than peas and sweetcorn which I've always bought frozen), or A!di/L!dl (all closer than Mr T anyway). We're not big fruit eaters, so generally keep a few tins in - and then just buy other bits once in a blue moon (mostly for my GDs after school !!!)Cheryl0
