My parents too dug up their lawn during the war. As a tiny child I remember rows and rows of tomato plants and runner beans. My Mum bottled all the tomatoes and the beans (no freezers in those days) were all salted down in large glazed crocks. I wish I could have asked them why they didn't grow onions though. There was apparently a huge shortage of onions during the war because they'd mostly been imported. I would have thought that growing onions would have been a priority but perhaps it was difficult to get either the seed or the sets.0

Firstly, Hester well done! Makes my blood boil when those who shouldn't get anything because they aren't entitled and don't need or deserve it claim benefits, when there are so many who really need that help and for seemingly bizarre reasons aren't entitled.
Thanks for the tips about frozen peas everyone - I shall investigate morries and mr a! I have a friend staying and am showing her how we meal plan and shop! She is very surprised that our food bills are so cheap, given how much we all eat! We are also teaching her some cooking skills, lasagne, hm bread and rolls, chicken pie and choc and orange muffins so far! Have explained rubber chicken and stretchy mince - will demonstrate those over the next day or two! She says she never buys a chicken cos she doesn't know what to do with anything but the breast meat, she hadn't realised that the rest could be used in the same way! Now my friend isn't silly in any way, so it did make me wonder how many other people there are like her, spending huge amounts on food simply because they don't have the skills to cook from scratch or use everything or use cheaper alternatives.
As for gardening, my lovely ds and his friend are going to clear my weedy raised beds for me, and I have everything I need to plant out when the weather picks up I think. I'm taking the kids to the garden centre at the weekend as they are doing potato growing workshops for kids, and they all get goodies to take home! And best of all, it's free!
As a bribe for my son I bought a shiny new pressure barrel and a cider making kit - can't find my old stuff out in the garage, think it must've been given to a friend. Anyway he is really impressed by his homebrewing, and is planning lager next, and has been cleaning demi johns to make me some wine! I know what you mean
This seemed to be the nub of Jamie Olivers campaign to "pass it on". I bet you'll feel really chuffed when you have helped0 -
Hello everyone
Just wondered if any other OSers had tried Mayonnaise on their hair as a conditioner. I had run out of my usual product last night and tried a Mayonnaise substitute. Oh dear:eek: can't say I was impressed. It just doesn't feel right. So maybe it was just the way I used it -I washed my hair as usual, plonked on a dollop of mayonnaise and my hair immediately felt all dry and tangled. I left the Mayo on for about 2-3 minutes and then rinsed it out. The result is a rather dull disappointment. I have read since that maybe I should have left the Mayo on for 15 minutes and wrapped a towel round my head. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas or maybe I should just stick to putting it on salads and sandwiches and not on my head:DSealed Pot Challenge 7 Member 022 :staradmin:staradmin:staradmin

Sadly some of us dont get the choice of being able to use independent shops - butchers, bakers, greengrocers, fishmongers etc. I would love to have the choice. All we have is one butcher that only sells in multipacks and a coupla stalls on the market that serve you from the back so you can't see what you are getting.Plus a very understocked inadequate medium sized TescoWhat Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

I've never done this but there's a lot of info online if you google it. Favourite seems to be putting it on wet, clean hair, wrapping hair in a plastic hood/towel and leaving on for 30 minutes, then washing hair to remove it. Must be proper mayo, presumably because of the oil content?
I'm just off to check if there's anything on here about it.Not much info on mayo but this might be of use - Old Style Hair Repair

Well - I've been using some up as hair conditioner. I just dollop a load on and rub it in and leave it whilst I'm having breakfast - then have my morning shower and hairwash as normal. Seems okay.0 -

re conditioner I don't really use any now as my hair is shortish and looks like a crows nest most of the time thanks to DS3's obsessive hair twiddling (mine not his own!)
I seem to remember using an egg as instructed many years ago but turned the water on too hot to rinse it off and resulted in a fine shaggy perm interlaced with scrambled eggs0
