  • Yikes!, Gingervamp. That could have been dreadful.

In Wales it's snowy and our car's stuck at the bottom of our lane - own silly fault for not getting some salt ready

I think that MSE has a great deal to do with so many of us having pantries and cupboards ready stocked, so well done and thank you to Martin:money:. I've always kept a pantry, even in London, as it was how I was brought up, but I think that this site has brought the principle of being prepared back to many people.

Off to make a cuppa from the kettle singing on the woodfired range. The only thing I'll miss if the strikes/snow cut the power off is our 'pooter and the interntet. Ah well, see you when the weather picks up!

    Best of luck to all

Another who doesn't get caught up in the news either! :)

    I find it toooo depressing!

One of the 'up' sides to all the snow - it's stopped Robert Peston and his chums banging on about the economy......:D

    Anyway I would much rather watch DS1 & DS2 playing snowballs :D

    (Daren't join in - their aim is lethal...:rotfl: )
SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)

Afternoon all. It's all lovely and snowy here (although I wouldn't call it a major snow event:rolleyes: ) It looks nice though. However, some schools are shut and horror of horrors, no broadband this morning  The tele was down too. I gather some of us are heading for what could be another major snow event later in the week -so we've been warned! There was however, something of a thaw here last night, before everything eventually iced up. DH and I kept hearing thumping noises and evenutally curiosity got the better of me -as I stepped out into the wintry wonderland a large lump of soft snow slid off the conservatory roof and down the back of my neck ....nice! That'll teach me not to be so nosy:o. I love snow though -wish I was young enough and fit enough to go hurtling down a steep hill on a board, like I used to .....think I might do myself some serious damage now:rotfl:

I hope everyone is keeping nice and warm.

we used to go down the hills on old tin trays but my son always preferred a black bag to his sledge

we had several mini power cuts last night, lights flickered, tv and pc off just for a couple of seconds. Ice is liable to bring power cables down so I'm keeping my torches and candles at the ready :)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

nannaC - hope you don't mind, but I posted your recipe for cheese and onion soup on the daily thread, after someone had asked for it! Seems like several people have now tried it and all love it, so thanks again from them and me!

Brrrrr! It's a bit parky down South today (and I'm no "soft Southerner", thank you very much!)

It's very rare I'm at home all day, and when I am, I'm normally busy doing DIY or keeping myself entertained....today I'm working from home, on the laptop, and I'm freezing, despite wearing 2 vests and 2 jumpers! The thermostat is set to 14deg (higher than it usually is during the day), I feel bad turning it up any higher as it's just me at home. Think I'll have to have another cup of tea (about 20th of the day)!

At least I've got dinner bubbling away in the SC - a very hot Thai curry, that'll warm me up...!

Snow melting here now, although there's still the odd flurry. I think the roads round here are gonna be awful in the morning as all the slush will have frozen...

Hi all, good to hear you are all surviving the snow, we have none, we had a little yesterday and it snowed heavily in the early evening but this morning it had all gone, our kids were devastated as they missed it yesterday due to us having to go out for the evening, They had unearthed the sledge ready for today though and now its gone.
I was kind of hoping that it would get a bit worse and maybe allow a little practise at living from store cupboard etc had candles at ready and BBQ all cleaned!
I know I should be relieved cos this week starts a really hectic few weeks, but I am slightly disappointed.
Have got dinner guests on Saturday followed by wedding the following week, guests the next week and then dinner guests one week later! All perfectly manageable, except I had no idea about the wedding till Sunday (when DH dropped it on me) and now have the old "what to wear" problem. Added to DH volunteering me to decorate the wedding cake, and my DS4 being sent home from school again, its all starting to look slightly frantic. Not to mention that I have never met the bride have no idea what she wants on cake and DH has agreed to be best mand and has decided I can write his speech, need I say more.
AT least I have so many meals backed up in freezer I don't need to worry about meals this week..

Well its not money that's the problem is it, it's people's greed for it. I dare say himan nature hasnt changed in 2000 years!

But there are always a few like us that buck the trend. I read this earlier today.

"I don't envy people with money as I used to do , for most of them want it all for themselves; it's best to have a little gift of making things."

...and when it comes to the greed for money....then I look back over previous centuries and think, for instance, of the slave trade and in countries like this one there came a point when so many people refused to have anything to do with it and the tide of opinion turned......so I favour the 100th Monkey idea myself and I think its possible to reach a "tipping point" in positive ways - as well as the negative ones like the economy and climate change. So - I havent given up hope that, somewhere along the line, the balance between materialistic people and non-materialistic people will change round...

And another lesson from history - women getting the vote - they thought it couldnt/wouldnt happen.....does anyone even KNOW the excuses that would have been used to withhold the vote from women for so long? The tipping point came there too...
  • Hi chaps

Overheard in the supermarket "Well our school is open but I think it's disgraceful. The teachers wouldn't be off if they weren't getting paid for today would they?"

I nearly stepped in and said a) the teachers don't make the decision to close a school and b) have some fun! Spend some time with your children! It passes too quickly.

Being sensible, I just got another 4 pints of milk and retreated. Mine have enjoyed being off school and I've enjoyed having them around.
