    |We have a lovely wee victorian school, with two classrooms and the head's house attached to it, sheep in the playground in summer.
The local farmers keep the roads clear here for the minibus and taxis.

I can understand why there are no snowploughs, it just wouldn't be worth the capital investment but round us it seems there are no gritters and we get icy conditions often enough in a normal year. We have several steep hills (our road is 1 in 10 and it's quite a busy road ) but the council only ever grit the main road. But people have to drive from the roads they live in before they can get on the main road. And the pavements are a nightmare for a week whenever we have the lightest dusting of snow. There used to be containers of grit along the roads but they don't provide those anymore. Also people don't dare clear their own bit of pavement in front of the house in case they get sued if someone slips whereas if they leave it they can't be sued even if it's actually a lot more dangerous.

Sorry for the grouse but I'm facing a horrible commute tomorrow. They'll TRY and run 2 trains an hour. (it's usually a cattle truck with 6 an hour in peak). And the school may or may not open because if the lorries can't deliver they can't provide lunches. (What's wrong with saying take a packed lunch?? Mine take one anyway). So I can't even try and leave early because I won't know about the school till 8.00
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Gosh, I hadn't realised how lucky we are. DS5's sent us an email this afternoon saying they will decide by 6.45 tomorrow morning and the info will be on the school website and county council website by 7am at the latest.

Best of luck with your commute.

Problem is the school's not local authority controlled so they'll make their own decision.

I can see it not opening - we've had nearly a foot of snow here - shock, horror!

Our local school doesn't always make a public announcement. It's often a case of getting there to find a notice on the gate

When our water went at around 7am last Wednesday (burst main down the road) their was no official way of getting any info from the school until 8:30am earliest (normally a bit after then). I actually got word at 8:35 (via a friend with contacts) that they were staying closed for the morning - despite the water having come back on at 8:30 - and we should check with them just after 12 to see if they were re-opening at 12:30. We were then told to check again at 1:20, and the eventually re-opened at 1:30am -- but with a finish time of 3:15 it hardly seemed worth it

My GDs didn't go in at all..... the little one finishes as 2pm so her class presumably didn't open at all, and I'd dumped them both back on the pre-school nursery where DD works at 8:50am. They had enough staff in to be able to absorb 2 extra children, otherwise I'd have had them all day -- but there was a staff meeting that night which meant DD wasn't expected home until 7:15-7:30pm, whereas she normally collects them at 5:30pm. (I made it clear to the nursery manager I either had them for the day or for the extended evening - but wasn't prepared to do both :rolleyes2 )

Don't all schools make their own decisions? It's always the head's call round here. One of ours once told me it meant she had to start ringing round the bus companies and taxi firms at about 5.30am:eek:

:rotfl:Cheryl - DS4's once told them during assembly that they were all going straight back home. One of his friends wasn't at assembly because he was taking a 2 1/2 hour Physics exam. He walked out of it at around 11.30 to find the school completely deserted. He sent out plaintive texts saying "Where are you all?" Poor lad had read/watched far too much scifi to react with equanimity!

I just had a giggle at the bbc news ticker at the bottom of the tv screen (sorry, cant remember exact words) but it said something like 'snow brings rush hour traffic to a standstill on the M25' sorry but I thought 'standstill' was the usual state of the traffic on the M25 :D

see, the bbc does have some entertainment value ;)
