Oh goodness - looks like the UK was really close to the edge in October.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11...s-collapse.html
Given the new bailout situation, it is possible we are close again (not that the powers that be would tell us until it was over). I'm sorry to be a doom monger here - but feel strongly that we should all be as prepared as we can be. If it is possible, we may all want to consider keeping a bit more cash on us than we normally would - just in case we don't have access to our accounts for a period of time. Though one must weigh this up against safety. These are the times I'm grateful for my 2 pound jar - it's not much, but it'll put food on the table for a while.0 -
Ye Gods and little fishes.......
....and I've just made a mental note that my intuition is a lot sounder thing to listen to than the Government any day of the darn week......as I've had a stash of cash for a while and was/am well stocked with food...precisely in case of that eventuality happening....
I guess the only thing one can say about that is the silver lining to that cloud is the banks would have been OURS...ALL OURS....which is precisely what I think they probably should be right now....lets face it...we couldnt do any worse than they have....and I think we'd do a sight better...0 -
That was scary. I used to have a food stash after one of our friends (who is the emergency planner for our county) said we would have a hard winter, but I used it up.
Maybe I ought to think again0 -
Hi folks - Caterina - glad your guardian angel was looking after you too. Please find a nice way to tell your friend you won't be travelling in her car any more - we don't want to lose you !
Sunflower - big hugs hunny - sometimes it feels better after you have a good cry - doesn't help any, but feels better.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but seen on tv - water bills are set to rise soon (didn't give a date). What's going to be next?
When I was out of work earlier in the year (4 1/2 months) - luckily did get HB/C Tax Benefit + I/S. By the time I had paid bills - all that was left for food shopping was £10.20 per week (good job there was only me to feed)
It is so annoying that the people at the top will pay more than that for a meal. I would love to see GB try and live off that !!!
As for Mr T - have been overcharged so many times in the past, I never leave now without checking the bill. It's not worth it.
A quote for anyone who needs hugs
" May the world hug you today
with its warmth and love
and whisper a joyful tune
in your heart.
May the wind carry a voice
that tells you there are friends
sitting in another corner of the world
right now, wishing you well."When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

Back to stocking up the plain flour, bicarb and tartaric acid, the dried milk, loo rolls [though there's seldom a shortage here - I overstock anyway!] and butter in the freezer.
Thanks for this thread, I've lurked for ages!If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0 -
Oh that's what I need, I have no butter . Where is cheap ?0

I was also thinking the same thing patchwork quilt, perhaps i should start stockpiling.
Although am fairly new to all this OS stuff although have learned lots of great things through the dfw board, but not sure on the storecupboard side of things.:o
Has any one got any ideas as to what is best to stockpile or is it just anything and everything.
I know that things will get easier for me during the year as i start to grow my own stuff so that will hopefully be a big help.
I am also getting better at stretching those meals and using up the left overs or making extra meals, so think it is slowly going in! Thanks to everyones great help:T:j Live on £4500, £2531/£4500:T 101 in 1001 (52/101):j:beer::j

oh ye gods, will it ever stop.
Back to the bucket in the shower and a bowl in the wash basin
lol, used to flush the loo of course
I read today that pensioners inflation rate is 5.9%. We just cannot keep up any more0 -
andan, start with dry goods and tins plus loo rolls and medicines. A bit at a time soon adds up. Store in any place you can find eg narrow shelves under the stairs, under the bed etc
some of us also have cooking stoves of various types, candles, wind up torches/lanterns and radios, also water carriers0
