You can just leave it as that.

Where exactly are these all inclusive phone contracts with internet access for about £20 pm?

We use landline to call abroad to friends/family. 0.5p per minute to Germany can't be bad!!!!

Talk Talk. You don't need to pay BT the land line rental my landline costs £16.50 per month for free evening UK calls, anytime European and large International countries (like USA but not middle east) Plus unlimted internet.

I got a BT line re-instated after a long cut-off, but what you need to do is be there and when the engineer arrives tell him you only want it connecting if it's free or £10 connection you don't want it if it's a new line at £125. Normally the engineer will check the box inside house and outside at the box and then tell you what is possible.

Personally I agree that if you are not all using it then it is likely to cause arguments and if you can get free wi-fi somewhere local it's probably not worth it.

    Thanks mlz1413, but that's still a landline.

Sonofa was suggesting not having a landline, just a mobile.

I'm with Virgin (and therefore no BT line) and get Medium Broad band and free UK calls 24/7 for £25 a month!

never used to bother with a land line until OH went to work abroad, and since having it, decided not to give it up when he came back as I've have such a good deal.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
  • "If your home has had telephone service from BT in the recent past, and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has dialling tone, it's likely you won't need to pay this charge. But where there's no suitable BT line available in your property the connection charge may apply "

  • since u r planning on a flatshare apart from installation costs u also have to consider cancellation costs. am not sure if it is charged if cancelled within a year or whether it is 6m but i was once charged this cancellation charge (apart from the initial connection charge) while flatsharing.

another problem incase u r broadband sharing is who takes the hit when things go wrong. what if one of the persons sharing the broadband starts visiting dodgy sites and then the cops pay a visit and whoever got the connection gets scr3wed. i dont know how people get around this problem but i dont think it is worth the hassle. mobile broadband with dongles is pretty cheap nowadays for normal browsing (but not if u r into downloading truckloads). same for mobile minutes as well, i have a 3 network package for £20 which gives me 1100 minscross network plus 300mins for 3network. if u have a 2nd phone then u can get an extra 2000mins for the 2nd phone free (only if u ask for it). u can use the freeminutes to call local numbers and use calling cards (local access numbers) to call international or other mobiles at very cheap rates or u can use override facilities like 1899.com etc (1899 is costly there are other cheaper ones available) or other similar ones to make cheaper calls abroad.

  • can't really advise on the broadband sharing aspect, but as far as the landline goes, I had a similar problem when I moved to a new flat, the previous tenant had been cut off.

the solution was basically ring customer services and prove that you weren't at the property when the phone was cut off. in my case, i just faxed the tenancy agreement, we showed we had signed for the property 3 months after the phone had already been cut.

BT promptly reconnected us for free.

the only warning I can give is that i was forced to listen to Enigma whilst on hold.
