free, should do anyway0 -
Not sure what the current BT promotions are, if any. But when we moved in, we had to pay the £125 fee because the previous tennant had had the phone line cut more than 12 months prior to us moving in. Apparently BT cut the phone line when you stop paying them, then if no one gives them any money for a year, they come back and rip things off your exchange so you need to have things reinstalled after that point.
We split the £125 with our landlord.0 -
cool thanks guys its only been a couple of months anyway0

You may have to pay since it was disconnected for non-paymentIf your house has had a BT phone service in the recent past and the line still has a dialling tone, it's likely it won't cost you anything to get your line working again (you can check for dial tone by plugging a telephone into the BT socket and lifting the receiver). You'll just have to pay your line rental (either monthly or quarterly), cost of calls, and for any additional services you require from BT.
If no dialling tone exists on the line, or if you have been disconnected for non-payment, there will be a standard connection charge to pay of £124.99 (subject to survey)..."Now to trolling as a concept. .... I think you may have to pay the connection fee.
Check out http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/notifs/30-09-2008/Notice08_boo/NotificationPeriodImpl298465FrameworkImpl291574.htm#FrameworkImpl291574
Think this is the lastest BT Deal. Worth checking out if you think you'll be there for at least 18months. BT still charge a £30 connection fee though.0 -
We found ourselves in a similar situation when we moved in to our rented accommodation, where the line had been cut for non-payment by the previous tenants.
Unless something is mentioned about a phone line being present in the way property is advertised (unlikely) then you can probably expect to be paying the full £125 (as they will more than likely have to physically re-connect you at the exchange, not just flip a switch somewhere).
However you can pay a bit extra (its about £25) and split that cost over four quarterly payments.
Then for the money-savers out there, log on to https://www.bt.com/paperfree and you will save £15 a year for online billing.0 -
I've gotta ask why bother?
Surely you all have mobile phones anyway? Just sounds like unnecessary expense for something that you may not all use equally, which would probably lead to arguments.0 -
Broadband? Genrally the only thing anyone ever has a landline for now.0

Have you ever compared the price of calls froma mobile Vs that from a landline?
e.g to vote John Sergeant to stay another week costs 15p from a BT landline, but a whopping 80p from a Vodafone mobile
... and don't even look at the price of connecting to the internet over a mobile phone"Now to trolling as a concept. ....
