I can't believe how useful this board is! Thank you everyone for responding.
I have looked at https://www.washerhelp.co.uk (excellent site), de-gunked again paying particular attention to the nooks and crannies, done a empty hot wash and run a few empty rinse cycles. I am now doing a load of washing with diluted conditioner. Fingers crossed that it will be OK.

If all else fails I will try the 2 in 1 tablets.

For the last two months, I have had the same problem with my washing machine. I took out the draw and popped it in the dishwasher and used sewing needle and cotton wool buds to clean the small holes above the draw. I then did a 90 degree wash when the machine was empty.

Now when I run the machine, the fabric conditioner goes into the drum!
