Quasar wrote:Over Christmas I got fed up with tea, coffee etc, and started fancying something... well, even simpler, but just as warming. So I cut a thin slice of lemon, squeezed the juice in a mug but left the slice in it, and poured hot water in.
Can't get simpler than that. I added a sweetener and had a wonderfully thirst-quenching hot drink. Been doing this every evening since, and I want to make a habit of it. It's cleansing, healthy and cheap.
Anyone has more cheap 'n healthy drinks to suggest? Hot or cold, whichever.
Ooooh, do it in the MORNINGIt's great to get the body refreshed and ready to go.
Actually, my Mother used to do that and passed it on to us ... even just the hot water w/out the lemon is good as a first thing cleanser too.
I'm getting used to Green Tea; I'm not a tea drinker but I heard that green tea was good for me so I've adopted that too. Can still only manage one cup of that a day though .. it's not the taste that prevents me having more ... it's the "watery-ness" of it(*I* know what I mean by that,

I know what you mean Queenie!!
As sweeteners have been mentioned a few times, I would like to say that the only one I ever use is Splenda. This is entirely natural as it is extracted from the sugar cane, just like sugar, but it has the sweetening factor only and not the harmful empty calories of white sugar.
I avoid white sugar as far as possible, and no other sweetener will do. Of course I'm well aware that when I eat out I might well ingest some of there baddies, but that's life.
Another thing: I put half a teaspoon of blackstrap molasses into coffee. Adds minerals, vitamins and a wee bit of calcium (blackstrap molasses has 120mg per tablespoon). Changes the taste a bit, but what wouldn't we do for our health, eh? :rolleyes:Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

I prefer drinking coffee, milk with one sugar. Not overly fond of tea but if I'm offered it I will drink it. I don't mind a hot cocoa in winter now and again. I drink heaps & heaps of water though and it's a constant source of irration when everyone  (except me) doesn't refill the water containers in the fridge. We have a tank for drinking water & it's so much nicer than the town stuff.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0

I love lemon with hot water ... and have converted OH to it too
... also have
hot water on its own
lots of cold water (especially at work, from the water machine)
green tea
herbal tea
have now stopped drinking coffee altogether and have the occasional ordinary tea
Have had a cold all week so honey has been added to the lemon ... along with a splash of brandy (well I slept well after drinking it so it must be better than those expensive cold cures;))Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
What do you think of using jif lemon instead of fresh, would you get the same health benefits?Trying to tidy and clean while the kids are still growing, is like trying to clear snow even though it's still snowing

I've used the Jif lemon in the past and it was ok but prefer the fresh lemon. I'm not sure but do they put preservatives etc in jif lemon to make it last?
When I first read the post I thought you meant jif lemon(the one for cleaning!!)0 -
Found this in Sainsburys:
It's green tea with lemon in made by Jacksons of Picadilly. It's really refreshing and full of antitoxidants. Normally £1.29 for 20, but was on offer for 99p in the Gateshead store. Here I go again on my own....0
