Readers Digest Prize Draw is it a con?

My mother (well in to her 80's) is completely taken in by this. Each letter gives her the clear impression that she is through to a very small group of finalists to be drawn for the big prize. Last year she refused to go on holiday because she was waiting for the next letter, which would have to be returned in 14 days for her to stay in the draw.
She believes that she has more chance if she buys from them and has ordered numerous books and subscribed me to Readers Digest as an Xmas present (I had to phone and cancel them, but I've no idea if she got any money back).
I don't doubt that the draw is genuine, but this is a dreadful way to part people from their money.4kWp, Panels: 16 Hyundai HIS250MG, Inverter: SMA Sunny Boy 4000TLLocation: Bedford, Roof: South East facing, 20 degree pitch20kWh Pylontech US5000 batteries, Lux AC inverter,Skoda Enyaq iV80, TADO Central Heating control0 -
I had the my usual envelope from RD all about 'cash draws' etc, with 'paper money' cheques for thousands of pounds. I opened it just to cut out my name etc. But one page, that was folded in three sections, seem to have more than a few instances of my name. Upon close scrutiny I counted my name 14 times. It's like 'how many instances of Mr Smith can you find in the picture'.
Unbelievable!0 -
Readers Digest I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. They keep sending my elderly mother in law books that she hasn't ordered and certainly doesn't want. Then they send her a letter demanding payment. She has been worrying and buying the books the last one cost her £18.00. She tells me this has been going on for years and has lost count on how many books she has bought. I was so annoyed when I found out. I rang them and they told me she should send them back and pay the postage. How dare they I emailed them to complain and was told they would cancel her subscription but they are still sending her books.0

I can't fathom why that would benefit rd since no validation of registration is required.0
