Running a dehumidifier

Just purchased an Ebac 2400e dehumidifier, yet to arrive. Wondered, how long do people run them for on a daily basis. We have a small flat and get bothered a lot with condensation problems, especially at this time of year. Would I have to run it for a long time initially to dry out the place and then as and when required sort of thing, or do people run them at set times, throughout the day. Just want to get an idea of how long I'd have to have it running etc and figure running costs etc. Any info much appreciated. :-)

We had a dehumidifier when we lived in a v damp rented houses, it was borrowed off my dad, from what I remember it had thermostatic type controls. You will be gobsmacked when you first get it how much moisture it pulls out of the air. They are also fantastic for drying washing.

Ours has a knob on it so you can vary how much it "dries" the air. I also bought a cheap timer switch so i could control when it was switched on rather than leave it on 24/7. I suppose it is hit and miss at first and you'll have to find what suits you best. Personally i have mine on when i have my heating on. I switch it off when the heating is off. However this is because i often have a few clothes drying on the radiators

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm hoping that it will arrive tomorrow otherwise I'll have to wait until Wednesday. :-(

Wanting to fire up my steam generator as I've got some ironing :-) but perhaps I'll leave it until tomorrow for when the Ebac arrives. Thanks for your replies.

Mine is quiet an old model now got it from Currys, Matsui dehumifier 125 the model. I use it every winter. Takes quiet a lot of water however when we have shower or wife irons there's a lot fo water and windows steam up.

It costs us about £100 about 15 years ago and is still going strong.

Got mine from Empire Direct Limited, £143.14 total, got stung with the carriage costs unfortunately, would have been £128.14 basic delivery to cost down South but up here we get hit with carriage costs big time. Bummer. There was another one which would have been £5.26 cheaper but I wouldn't have got it delivered until the end of next week and I need it ASAP.

I fined there quiet noisy they work similar to the back off a fridge, so if you don't like noise try and find a quiet place. I keep mine under the stairs in the hallway but its not in a cupboard and is open to air freely around the house. I keep time as I found its better that way as it switches on and off a lot more than have it on now and then because it may go for long periods due to water in the air.

I wish we could do without it as it is noisy well mine is anyhow. Let me know how you get on, I would be interested to compare the difference.

I can't wait to get it, I know that it will reduce my heating bills as most of the neighbours etc have condensation problems too and heating a damp house is impossible. I certainly felt it very chilly yesterday, due to using the SG for a fair bit the night before. It will be interesting to see how much moisture it takes from the air initially as we do get bothered a lot with condensation right now, despite having the windows open to air the flat etc etc. Spend a fortune on heating so hopefully it will bring the heating bill down a bit. May try and cut down on drier use too as that's on most days just now.

  • Hi Smiley_mum :hello:

I'd be very interested in your feedback when you get your new toy, hopefully you get it soon.

Do they really reduce heating bills??? Sounds great to me......

I don't know much about them. My Dad had one years ago, but never used it much - mainly when we had baths/showers.

I'll let you know how I go with it. I had a look at the manuals etc on the Ebac site and you have to let it stand for 2 hours before use, so can't fire it up straightaway. It is harder to heat a damp house, so it should reduce my heating bills. We shall see. Waiting patiently for the carrier to arrive with it, or rather impatiently as I need to go and get groceries too.

It's just arrived, yipppeee. Got the packaging off and reading the instructions while I tye this up. Will set it running this evening. Post back later. Great prompt delivery from Empire Direct Limited too, via Amtrak, brilliant. Only ordered it about 3pm yesterday.
