    Hi there

    I can thoroughly recommend:
Stop smoking In One hour, by Susan E Hepburn, which is a small booklet and hypnosis CD for under ten quid on Amazon. This worked for me, but I also followed it up by reading Allen Carr's Easy Way to stop smoking book

I used to work in mental health, and the Allen Carr book was HIGHLY REOMMENDED by one of our managers, who used it herself and said it was a brilliant use of psychological techniques.

    Good luck! :xmassmile

  • Hi there
I am a hypnotherapist so can answer any questions you may have.
Although all hypnosis is self-hypnosis I personally would not attempt any therapy with you in the first trimester.
I recently worked with a lady who was 6 months pregnant and had smoked for twenty years. Her husband had thought she already stopped so came to me in secret!
She had never tried to stop before so didn't have the resources that you have (you stopped for 7 years so you know you can do it again) but she is now a happy non-smoker!
You cannot become stuck in a hypnotic state, it is a very natural state that you already go in and out of every day eg. when you are driving somewhere and get to your destination but don't remember the journey, if you had needed to slam on your brakes for a small child you would have come out of that state very easily.
What I would advise is that you stay away from these 'stop smoking in one hour - guaranteed' type 'hypnotherapists'. It is illegal to make these claims for a start and as with anything, you will only stop if you really want to!
I do stop-smoking over two sessions a week apart. The first is talking about why someone smokes, why they want to stop, how many etc. The second is the actual hypnosis session with all the info that we talked about the week before. In between sessions the client will have been putting their own steps in place to stop, so that they are pro-active and not just a re-active client who wants me to wave a magic wand a make them a non-smoker!
I am an ex-smoker too and I stopped when pregnant so I do know what it is like, and as with all us ex-smokers when you do stop you will realise what a disgusting habit it is and how happy you are to be free of this nasty habit!

think about this.. when ur baby is born every time u ave a cig... wud u give your child one also????? no i doubt it... so why force a foetus to smoke BEFORE they are fully developed and born.... if you did this to a small baby the social services would take a considerable interest in your family.... however, cos the baby isnt born no one does anything....

just my opinion, but if you dont want to seriously harm a baby you love and want to keep then hey ..... STOP SMOKIN...... for your child!!!! if you want to damage the child and possibly give it health problems when born then continue.

nope ive never smoked. so i cant understand wot u r going thro .. but i am a parent and i would not do anything to harm my child...

not having a go... but please please please consider this child

THE CHAINS OF HABIT ARE TOO WEAK TO BE FELT UNTIL THEY ARE TOO STRONG TO BE BROKEN... :A
  • Nicotine replacement therapy is now available from GP's for both pregnant women and children over the age of 12. It's been made available to these two groups which were previously excluded because even for them the risks of smoking far outweigh any NRT risks.
  • Hi Cullumpster,

Congratulations on the pregnancy. My mum has been a heavy smoker all of her adult life. For her 64th birthday at her request I bought her a hypnosis session to stop smoking. It was one of those "one time only sessions" - but it did last more than an hour. She was told to do some prep - I think it was listening to a tape during the week before. This chap came with a guarantee of sorts - i.e. if you don't stop smoking immediately he will do further sessions as many times as necessary for free. My mum has not smoked since (more than 15 months now). She had tried everything else in the past and nothing else had worked for her. It wasn't cheap - I think it cost £200 ish.

    Good luck with everything

    Hi

I had the experience whereby I needed something to help me speak publically and I thought of hypnosis, I found a practicioner locally and the technique used on me successfully was Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP

See here for what happen during a Give up smoking session:
    http://www.hypnotize.me.uk/hypnotherapy-nlp-manchester/smoking-hypnotherapy-nlp-manchester.htm#TREATMENT

it sounds like mumbo-jumbo but it does work

It cost me £120 for 3 sessions.

    All the Best

Just as a money-saving thing, I'd start with the NHS resources and move on to more expensive things after that ... Have you tried getting help via the NHS 'as seen on TV'? And Dora's point about NRT now being available to you may also help. Your partner giving up at the same time would also be good, I'm sure!

    Best of luck!

I quit when I became unexpectedly pregnant with my first. Guilt did it for me. How could I smoke when I was pregnant with a defenceless baby! Maybe you could read up on the damage you are doing not only to yourself but to your baby too and maybe you will be able to put your baby first and stop.

I really have no tolerance to people who smoke when pregnant. It disgusts me more than pretty much anything. I stopped smoking at the most stressfull time of my life. I lived in a squalid council flat, I had no job, my friends had moved away, my mother was a !!!!! and my partner left me. Despite all that I managed to quit and sort my life out for my baby and if I can do it, anyone can.

  • Hi Cullumpster

I am a desperate smoker. I have given up several times using every conceivable method out there and I have tried hypnosis - it didn't work for me and I just ended up thinking about smoking constantly, it drove me mad. However, everyone is different and maybe it will work brilliantly for you.

As you are pregnant, I would suggest you get yourself down to the Doctors and go on one of those NHS group therapy sessions with your OH. They are FANTASTIC and FREE. I stopped with that for months but stupidly started again for no reason at all, I'm just weak. The group therapy thing has an amazing effect on you and you feel, as a group you are all in it together. In the first week you talk about how you are going to stop and go through all the options, then you all set a date and then you all stop together. Weekly group Carbon Monoxide testing keeps you on the straight an narrow! I used the patches and they are great - I am going to go back on them when I have set a date.

I will say this though - your OH MUST stop too or you may well be wasting your time. You need to remove ALL temptation. You might have a few arguments due to the pair of you being in a stinking bad mood for a couple of days but the health of the baby is far more important than worrying about that. Well, you know that as you have done it before! You have the best reason to stop now - do it!

    Good luck

Congratulations on the pregnancy and well done for trying to stop.

I agree with the poster who said take it minute by minute. The most effective tool you have is yourself. And knowing your little one will benefit from your efforts will hopefully keep your willpower strong.

    Good luck.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
